Abstract: There is disclosed a method of playing back information from an optical multilayer disk having a plurality of recording disks stacked on top of each other, by the use of an optical pickup device. In order to switch the focused recording layer from a first one to a second one so that data is read from the second recording layer, the focus balanced condition of the pickup device is switched from a setting (Ra) providing a focus error characteristic adapted for the first recording layer to a reference setting (Rb) providing a neutral focus error characteristic. Then, the focal point of the pickup device is moved from the first recording layer. Subsequently, the pickup device is focused onto the second recording layer, and data is read from the second recording layer. Thereafter, the focus balanced condition of the pickup device is switched to a setting (Rc) adapted to the second recording layer.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize the focus servo after a focus jumping is made on a multilayered disk. SOLUTION: When a focus jump is made from a first layer to a second layer, a switching is made by a selector 16-3 from the output of a variable resistor Ra, which outputs the focus balance voltage of a first layer recording layer, to the output voltage of a variable resistor Rb which outputs the focus balance voltage in a neutral condition. Then, a focus jump is performed and after a focus servo is activated, a switching is made by the selector 16-3 to the output voltage of a variable resistor Rc which outputs the focus balance voltage of the second layer. Thus, the focus servo is made stable after a focus jump.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the time to initiate a reproducing by greatly reducing the time to discriminate a disk. CONSTITUTION:A reproducing mode right after a disk loading is initially set to the reproducing mode of a standard video disk, an optical pickup 4 is moved to the position where the lead in information of the subject standard video disk is read, under a control and a video disk 1 is controlled and rotated at the rotational speed of the standard video disk. A MUSE/LD discriminating circuit 10 and a system controller 11 automatically discriminate the kind of the installed video disk based on the presence or the absence of reproduced signals which are reproduced under the set initial condition and the reproduced signals. By this arrangement, standard video disks which are popular and are easily discriminated at a slower rotational speed, are mainly discriminated and all others are discriminated as high quality video disks.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To detect an exact tracking traverse by detecting tracking waveforms in accordance with return light beams by a tracking error detecting means when an optical pickup is moved in the diametral direction of a disk. CONSTITUTION:The laser beam to be cast to the disk 1 is split to three beams. The return light beams obtd. by these beams are detected by first to third photodetectors 7 to 9. The tracking error is detected by detecting (push-pull method) the difference between the photodetecting levels of the first and third photodetectors. In such case, the tracking traverse is detected by using the detection level of an adequate level at all times even if a variation is generated in the light quantity of the reflected light beams by a difference in formats, etc. The tracking traverse is thus always exactly detected.
