The present invention relates to an image processing apparatus and method, and a program capable of presenting a stereoscopic image having different parallaxes. An image capture apparatus 11 captures photographic images P(1) to P(N) in a state of being turned around a center of turn C11. The image capture apparatus 11 crops, as strip images, certain regions in the photographic images, and arranges side by side and combines the strip images to generate panoramic images in which a region in an image capture area is set as a subject. The image capture apparatus 11 obtaining panoramic moving images formed of a plurality of panoramic images by generating a plurality of panoramic images while shifting the cropping positions of the strip images. The image capture apparatus 11 selects two panoramic moving images from among a plurality of panoramic moving images having parallaxes in accordance with a specified parallax, and obtains a stereoscopic panoramic moving image formed of the two panoramic moving images, The two panoramic moving images constituting the stereoscopic panoramic moving image are reproduced simultaneously, thus enabling stereoscopic display of the subject. The present invention can be applied to a camera.

The present technique relates to a display device and method, and a program for presenting high-quality stereoscopic images in a simpler manner. A display unit is a four-viewpoint display device having a parallax barrier. On the display unit, block regions that are formed with pixels of channels CH0 through CH3 aligned in the parallax direction are aligned in the parallax direction. An allocation control unit allocates a parallax image for the left eye or a parallax image for the right eye to the pixels of each channel in block regions, in accordance with the viewpoint position of the user. For example, the same parallax image is allocated to pixels of two different channels adjacent to each other in the parallax direction. A generating unit generates a combined image by combining the parallax image for the right eye and the parallax image for the left eye in accordance with the allocation performed by the allocation control unit, and causes the display unit to stereoscopically display the combined image. The present invention can be applied to display devices.

In response to an instruction for displaying an image in which a specific region in an area to be captured is displayed, the image capture apparatus 11 selects two photographic images between which parallax having a predetermined magnitude occurs in a subject in the specific region from among photographic images in which the specific region is displayed, and crops regions in which the subject in the specific region is displayed from these photographic images to produce right-eye and left-eye sub-images. These sub-images have an appropriate parallax and therefore are displayed simultaneously using a lenticular method or the like. Thus, a stereoscopic image with depth can be displayed. The present invention can be applied to a camera.

To provide an excellent photographing apparatus including a plurality of cameras and capable of photographing a wide angle image with less parallax. View point positions (camera positions) of video cameras 101 to 106 are radially arranged at predetermined angular intervals on a horizontal concentric circle about a vertical reference axis that passes a predetermined reference point. The video cameras are fixed in such a manner that camera principal-axis directions of the video cameras are individually directed outward and upward from a horizontal plane by a predetermined elevation angle T vu , with the result that upper end portions of a vertical angle of view overlap. Therefore, photographing can be performed uninterruptedly even in an overhead direction without providing a camera that is directed right above.

A display unit is a display device for four viewpoints, including a parallax barrier, and a plurality of block regions, each including pixels in channels CH0 to CH3 arranged in a parallax direction, are arranged on the display unit in the parallax direction. An assignment control unit assigns a parallax image for a left eye or for a right eye to a pixel in each channel in a block region according to the viewpoint position of a user. For example, the same parallax image is assigned to pixels in two different channels that are adjacent to each other in the parallax direction. A generation unit generates a combined image by combining parallax images for a left eye and for a right eye according to the assignment by the assignment control unit, and causes the combined image to be stereoscopically displayed on the displayunit. Subtitles of e.g. video information are recorded on a record medium (91) e.g. a disc recording. A first subtitle is recorded for use during normal playback. A second subtitle is recorded for use exclusively during trick-play. Addresses for the subtitles to be played back during the trick playback mode are stored in an area of the record medium (91) reserved for these addresses. The record medium acts as a computer-readable memory which directs a computer (14) to retrieve these addresses and locate subtitles to be displayed (1,7) during the trick playback mode on the record medium. The subtitles are searched by decoding (7) the subtitles located at the addresses on the record medium. The decoded (7) subtitles are displayed during the trick playback mode, mixed with the video (8,9,10).

The color video signal was originally recorded so that the crosstalk components are frequency interleaved relative to the signal in the track being reproduced, and signal processing apparatus permits the luminance and color carrier signals to be processed and the respective crosstalk components eliminated using only a single time delay element for both luminance and color carrier crosstalk components. The single delay unit is part of a comb filter and is particularly adapted for fabrication as a CCD element.
