    Abstract: Organoclay compositions which comprise the reaction product of a smectite-type clay having an ion exchange capacity of at least 50 meq. wt. per 100 g. clay (active basis), and an alkoxylated quaternary ammonium compound having one or two alkoxylated chains containing 0-10 moles ethylene oxide and 3-15 moles of propylene or butylene oxide residues are useful thixotropic materials, especially for the preparation of aqueous systems.

    Abstract: Organoclays based on specific types of ester quats may be remarkably effective for use in preparing nanocomposites. These organoclays may comprise the reaction product of a smectite clay and a quaternary ammonium compound (or "quat") which may comprise two esterified radicals (hereinafter called a "diester quat"). The diester quat may be present in admixture with further quaternary ammonium compounds having esterified radicals, especially compounds having three esterified radicals (hereinafter "triester quats"); or compounds having a single esterified radical (hereinafter "monoester quats"). Where such a mixture of quats is used, the reaction is between the smectite clay and the quat mixture. The diester quat may be present at greater than 55 wt.% of the quaternary mixture; and any triester quat may be less than 25 wt.%, with the fatty acids corresponding to the esters in the mixture having a degree of unsaturation such that the iodine value may be from about 20 to about 90.

    Abstract: A method of preparing rubbers containing organoclays comprises curing an organoclay-rubber composition in which the organoclay is dispersed in a rubber polymer, the composition being substantially free of carbon black, silica, and silica-treated carbon black. The rubber may be nitrile rubber and the organoclay may be montmorillonite, hectorite, saponite, attapulgite, beidellite, stevensite, sauconite, nontronite, sepiolite, or Laponite (RTM). The organoclay-rubber composition may be formed by combining a clay with a rubber polymer, which is then combined with an onium ion. The onium ion may be a multi-charged ion or may comprise an ammonium ion. Activators, accelerators, and vulcanising agents may also be included in the composition. A rubber formed by the method is also disclosed.
