Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology to recover depth information relating to elements in a basic image corresponding to a plurality of reference image views. SOLUTION: An image processing system recovers the 3D depth information for the pixels of the basic image showing one view of a scene. The system detects the plurality of pixels in the basic image showing a first view of the scene. The system determines the 3D depth of the plurality of pixels in the basic image by matching thereto the correspondence to the plurality of pixels in a plurality of images showing a plurality of views of the scene. Next, the system forms a virtual divisional continuous depth surface as viewed from the basic image by tracing the pixels on the virtual divisional continuous depth surface by space propagation starting at a pixel detected in the basic image by using a plurality of matched and corresponding pixels of the plurality of images. The successfully traced pixels relate to the depth of the scene as viewed from the basic image.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scalable method and a device capable of creating a two-dimensional image from a plurality of cameras. SOLUTION: An image processing system processes in a real time, a plurality of images which are different views from the same object of video data for matching the characteristic in an image in order to support reproduction of a three-dimensional animation. The different images are captured by the plurality of cameras, and processed by a digital processing device to discriminate the characteristic, and preliminary two-view characteristic matching is executed. Image data and matched characteristic point definition are communicated to an adjacent camera in order to support at least two-image matching. Matched characteristic point data are transferred to a central computer, and the central computer performs multi-view correspondence between all the images. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
