    Abstract: The power controller has a switch (10) in series with the load (2). The switch may be a gate turn-off thyristor (GTO), made bi-directional by a rectifier bridge. Alternatively the switch can be implemented with two anti-parallel GTO thyristors. The switch is normally closed and is controlled so that it opens at each alternation of the supply. The control (3) of the thyristor is provided through a train of pulses that are at double the supply frequency. A capacitor (C) in across the switch damps the switching transient spikes. The control allows the early part of the alternating cycle through and blocks the later part, the reverse of the load waveshape using conventional triac control.
