    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an MPEG standard coded video sequence with simplified computation, which is suitable for applications at a low cost. SOLUTION: The method of this invention calculates respective top motion coefficient (VTOPX,Y(K)) and bottom motion coefficient (VBOTX,Y(K)) depending on estimation of a motion vector of a top half frame (MVTOPX,Y(K)) and a bottom half frame (MVBOTX,Y(K)) with respect to each macro block consisting of a top half frame and a bottom half frame, the current picture is recognized as an interlace picture when the distributions of the motion coefficients (VTOPX,Y(K), VBOTX,Y(K)) are substantially equal to each other, and the current picture is recognized as a progressive picture when the distributions of the motion coefficients (VTOPX,Y(K), VBOTX,Y(K)) are substantially different from each other.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the technology for enhancing estimation of a motion in the case of processing a video image for a video compressor and a coder. SOLUTION: In compression and coding of digital data relating to a video sequence consisting of pictures including motion estimation to eliminate temporal redundancy, remarkable advantages of the capability to recognize occurrence of scene changes are obtained, since only estimation of forward motion is used for pictures preceding a scene change and only estimation of backward motion is used for pictures in succession to the scene change of a given sequence to make prediction calculation of pictures. According to this method, a scene change is detected with reliability by checking two separate indices. Thus, accidental detection in the case of pictures with noise, zooming, or other situations that may possibly cause an adverse effect on one or the other index is prevented.

    Abstract: A method for controlling the bit-rate of a bitstream (OS) of encoded video signals at a variable bitrate (VBR), the bitstream being generated by compressing a video sequence of moving pictures (IS), wherein each picture comprises a plurality of macroblocks of pixels compressed by any of transform coding (DCT), temporal prediction, bi-dimensional motion compensated interpolation or combinations thereof, to produce any of I and/or P and/or B frames, the method involving quantization of said macroblocks effected as a function of a quantization parameter (mquant). The method includes the steps of: defining a target bit-rate (target_bitrate) as well as maximum positive (max_err_pos) and negative (max_err_neg) error values between the target bit-rate and an average value of the current bit-rate of the bitstream (OS), controlling the current bit-rate in order to constrain it between said maximum positive and negative error values, and defining an allowed range of variation for updating at least one reference parameter (Qbase) representative of the average value of the quantization parameter (mquant) over each picture, wherein said allowed range is determined as a function of the target bit-rate (target_bitrate) and the maximum positive and negative error values (max_err_pos, max_err_neg).
