    Abstract: A polyvinylidene chloride latex composition suitable for coating substrates comprising a copolymer of (A) 70 to 95 percent by weight vinylidene chloride, (B) 0.5 to 30 percent by weight hydroxyalkyl ester of an alpha, betaethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, (C) 0 to 3 percent by weight ethylenically unsaturated sulfur acid having sulfur in valence state 6, (D) 0 to 5 percent by weight ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and (E) 0 to 29.5 percent by weight ethylenically unsaturated monomer other than (A), (B), (C) or (D).

In the examples the latices are obtained by emulsion polymerisation using a seed latex from vinylidene chloride and (b) hydroxyethyl acrylate or hydroxypropyl methacrylate (c) sodio 2-sulphoethyl methacrylate, (d) acrylic acid and (e) methyl acrylate. The products are used to coat corona discharge treated polypropylene and unprimed polyethylene.
