Abstract: A process for the preparation of a catalyst system having a catalytically active component of an oxide, metal or alloy of one or more of the elements copper, zinc, cadmium, nickel, cobalt, iron, manganese or magnesium, homogeneously dispersed over a solid particulate inorganic thermostable carrier material, wherein the catalytically active component is precipitated onto the carrier material from an acid aqueous solution of a complex of an alpha -, beta -, or gamma -amino acid, an amino-sulphonic acid, or derivatives of such acids, with one or more of such elements, by gradually and homogeneously generating hydroxyl ions within the solution while maintaining the absence of free ammonia.

Heading C7D A particulate alloy is prepared by contacting a particulate metal or metal compound of a first metal component of the alloy with an acidic solution having a pH of between 1 and 5 of at least one metal compound of a further metal component of the alloy desired in a liquid e.g. water or alcohol and reducing the composite metal material with a reducing agent e.g. H 2 , CO, nascent H 2 or hydrazine the reduction being effected in the liquid phase for a sufficient period of time whereby an alloy is obtained at least on the surface of the said first metal component. The particulate metal or metal compound may be deposited on a carrier material (e.g. alumina) prior to the reduction and one of the metal compounds may be in the form of a suspension in the liquid which may be agitated. Sulphuric, nitric, formic or acetic acid may be added to control the pH when the liquid is water and the solution may be buffered. The alloy constituents may include Au, Ir, Cu, Os, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, Ag, Sb, Cd, Co, Ga, Ge, In, Hg, Pb, Mo, Ni, Re, Te, Tl, Th, Sn, W, Ag, Fe, Co and may be added in the form of salts, acids or soluble oxide. The alloy formed may be a Surface alloy on one of the alloy constituents, may be of particle size less than 15A and may be used as a catalyst.
