Abstract: 1,237,499. Dyeable acrylonitrile copolymers. STAMICARBON N.V. 23 June, 1969 [25 June, 1968], No. 31639/69. Heading C3P. Dyeable acrylonitrile copolymers are prepared by polymerizing a monomer mixture containing (a) at least 35% by weight of acrylonitrile and (b) α-methylene-glutaric acid and/or a monohydrocarbyl or mono-(substituted hydrocarbyl) ester thereof, preferably in an amount of 0À1- 10% by weight. Where the mono-ester is used in (b), some corresponding di-ester may also be present. Preferred as mono-esters for (b) are C 1 -C 22 mono-alkyl esters; other suitable esters are the cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, phenyl and benzyl esters. The hydrocarbyl group of the ester monomers may be substituted, for example, by halogen. The monomer mixture may include a further monomer component, e.g. methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride or styrene. Polymerization can be effected in bulk, in solution (e.g. in dimethyl formamide, dimethyl acetamide, dimethyl sulphoxide or aqueous zinc chloride), or in aqueous dispersion or emulsion, using initiators such as azoisobutyronitrile, lauroyl peroxide, hydrogen peroxide, di-(t-butyl- 4-cyclohexyl) percarbonate, cumene hydroperoxide, potassium persulphate/sodium metabisulphite (optionally with ferrous compounds), butyl lithium or U.V. radiation. In aqueous polymerizations the pH is preferably from 1À5 to 3À5. A chain transfer agent such as dodecyl mercaptan may be included in the polymerization reaction. The copolymers obtained can be used to form shaped objects such as filaments and may be admixed with additives such as heat- or U.V.-stabilizers, pigments, dyes, plasticizers, fillers and lubricants.

Abstract: The compound 7-amino-4-thia-oenanthic acid, and its nitrile, esters and salts are prepared by reacting beta-mercapto-propionic acid, or its nitrile, esters or salts, with allylamine, the electrons of the nitrogen atom of which are bound, in the presence of a solvent and under the influence of U.V. radiation. The electrons of the nitrogen atom of allylamine may be bound by using the amine in combination with an acid, e.g. HCl or CH3COOH, or by using a molar excess of the beta-mercaptopropionic acid, or by using the amine in the form of a salt. The novel nitrile, esters and salts may be converted to the acid by known methods.
