Abstract: A liquid fuel injection pump for supplying precisely measured charges of fuel under high prssure, has a housing in which a fuel distributing rotor is journaled. The rotor carries a high pressure charge pump for pressurizing the charges of fuel and a pair of through bores in the housing mount a pair of shuttles which alternate in pumping measured charges of fuel into the charge pump chamber. Fuel regulated by a metering valve is delivered to a chamber at one end of each shuttle and the fuel charge so produced is then pumped into the charge pump chamber by applying hydraulic pressure to the other end of the shuttle. A ball check valve carried by the rotor isolates the shuttles from the charge pump. An axially adjustable stop at each end of each through bore limits the movement of each shuttle in each direction and the stops for each shuttle are accessible through the end of its through bore for changing the limit of movement of the shuttle in each direction independently of the other stop for the shuttle. A passage supplies fuel to a closer plunger which hydraulically seats the ball check valve and the fuel trapped between the plunger and its stop cushions the impact therebetween as the charge pump pressurizes the pressure, in the rotor.

Abstract: A fuel injection pump is provided with an improved spill control mechanism to accurately supply a desired fuel charge to an internal combustion engine. The fuel pump includes a rotor having a charge pump for pressurizing measured charges of fuel for delivery to the engine and a cam ring adapted to rotatably receive the rotor and to actuate the charge pump upon rotation of the rotor. The cam ring is angularly adjustable to control the timing of the pressurized fuel delivery to the engine. A spill collar mounted adjacent to the cam ring and adapted to rotatably receive the rotor includes a spill port for diverting fuel flow from the charge pump upon registration of a spill passage in the rotor with the spill port in the collar. A pivotal crank mounted on the cam ring and engageable with the spill collar is provided for adjusting the angular position of the spill collar relative to the cam ring to control the amount of fuel diverted from the charge pump. The fuel pump preferably includes a governor mechanism operable upon rotation of the rotor and operatively connected to the crank for automatically adjusting the angular position of the spill collar to maintain a desired engine speed.

Abstract: A rotary distributor fuel injection pump is provided with a main high pressure pumping chamber and an auxiliary high pressure pumping chamber which have a common inlet and outlet passage. The pumping plungers in said pumping chambers operate in unison to generate simultaneous high pressure pulsed charges of fuel within the pumping chambers. Both pumping chambers are connected to deliver their high pressure outputs simultaneously to the output passage for delivery sequentially to each of the cylinders of an associated engine. A speed responsive valve controls the delivery of the output from the auxiliary pumping chamber to the common outlet passage and isolates the auxilliary chamber from the common inlet and outlet passage without impairing the connection of the main pumping chamber with the common inlet and outlet passage when engine speed reaches a predetermined level. A valving arrangement is provided to maintain the auxiliary pumping chamber in its isolated condition until the engine is essentially stopped.

Abstract: A liquid fuel injection pump for supplying timed charges of fuel to an engine by timed pumping strokes includes an adjustable timing mechanism for changing the timing of the pumping strokes. The timing mechanism includes an advance piston which is variably positionable in response to two different hydraulic control pressures. A speed related control pressure operates a servo mechanism associated with the advance piston to provide a component of speed advance. The reference position of a servo spring associated with the servo mechanism is varied by the second control pressure acting against a piston which mounts the spring and which is biased to a position of relatively advanced timing, thereby to add a component of advance which modifies or supplements the speed advance. The second control pressure is correlated with engine load and/or acceleration and in one embodiment is derived from the positioning of the fuel metering means and in another embodiment is derived from the intake manifold air pressure such as that from a turbocharged engine so that the timing is relatively advanced at low loads and during acceleration, and is relatively retarded at higher loads. A gate controlled by the position of a fuel limiting plunger coacts with the advance piston's servo mechanism to prevent advance of the advance piston during engine cranking, and maximum fuel delivery per pumping stroke is controlled according to intake manifold air pressure.

Abstract: A fuel injection pump with a control system for regulating the quantity and timing of the delivery of fuel to an associated engine is disclosed. In the control system, three pistons, slidably mounted in parallel bores, are provided. One of the pistons is powered so that it assumes an axial position indicative of engine speed. A second piston is powered to assume an axial position indicative of the quantity of fuel being delivered by the pump. The first and second pistons are each provided with a cam surface, and cam followers controlled thereby interconnect these pistons with the third piston to control the axial position of the third piston and the timing of delivery of fuel by the pump. A second cam surface on the speed positioned piston is connected to a variable stop which varies the maximum amount of fuel which can be delivered by the pump in accordance with speed and a second cam surface on the fuel quantity positioned piston actuates a feedback control to adjust the amount of fuel delivered by the pump so as to maintain the selected engine speed. Various additional modifying or override controls are provided to selectively modify the operation of the pump in accordance with other parameters, such as manifold air pressure, or during starting, or in case of malfunction.

Abstract: A supply pump comprising a body having an inlet and an outlet both in fluid communication with an interior region of the body which contains two pistons positioned to reciprocate coaxially and which define three variable volume chambers, one between the two pistons and in fluid communication with the inlet, a second between one piston and the outlet and a third between the other piston and the outlet. The pistons have different working areas, and the piston of larger area carries a check valve which allows fluid flow from the chamber between the pistons to the chamber between the larger piston and the outlet. A regulating spring acts between the body and the smaller piston to urge both pistons against a mechanical drive means including a reciprocable rod carried by a tappet contacting a driven cam. During each forward and reverse stroke of the pistons in response to rotation of the cam, supply fluid is drawn into the pump through the inlet and forced out of the pump through the outlet.

Abstract: A precision fuel injector having an inwardly opening pressure operated valve positioned in a bore forming a valve chamber and guided for reciprocal movement to open and close the valve wherein the valve guide at the end of the valve chamber opposite the valve tip is provided with a sleeve extending into the valve chamber to provide an integral filter. The sleeve is interposed between the fuel inlet and the valve chamber and provides communication therebetween through a pair of annular clearances having a width which is one-half or less of the diameter of the discharge orifices of the injector to trap solid particles and prevent the blockage thereof. The filter construction retains the trapped particles in the flow path where the velocity of fuel flow is maximum to subject them to the repetitive high pressure hydraulic forces as sequential measured charges of fuel are delivered to the injector to hammer them against the hardened metal edge of the filter and pulverize them to render the filter self-cleaning.

Abstract: A fuel injection pump is provided with timing control in which a hollow cap removably mounted in a bore of the fuel pump forms a pressure chamber in which the advance piston is axially movable for controlling the timing of injection. An annulus around the cap provides a passage for the delivery of pressurized fuel to the pressure chamber and a flat reed valve in the pressure chamber overlying the inlet port of the pressure chamber isolates the ring seals for sealing the annulus from the repetitive high pressure pulses imposed when the pumping plungers move past the cam lobes during pumping strokes which otherwise may cause the seals to be extruded into the clearance gap between the cap and the bore.
