[Also in Divisions C3 and C5] The invention comprises hydroxybenzyl substituted amines selected from compounds having the formulµ wherein A is a saturated divalent alkylene hydrocarbon group having 2 to 6 carbon atoms, x is an integer from 1 to 10, Z is selected from oxygen and sulphur, R is substantially aliphatic hydrocarbon polymer group of from 50 to 20,000 carbon atoms and R 1 is an alkyl group of from 2 to 20,000 carbon atoms and stable boron compound interaction products thereof. The radical R may contain polar groups in such proportion that the hydrocarbon character of the radical is not significantly changed. Such compounds are prepared by reacting appropriately substituted phenols with appropriate polyalkylene polyamines and formaldehyde and then reacting the product with additional formaldehyde or with additional formaldehyde and a further appropriately substituted phenol. Finally, the products are reacted with boron compounds to produce boron interaction products if required. The examples relate to the preparation of products from such phenols as polypropylene- and polybutene-substituted phenols and such amines as tetraethylene pentamine and diethylene triamine, reaction products of tetra ethylene pentamine with urea and diethylene triamine with thiourea. Boron is introduced into some products by heating with boric acid. The products are employed as lubricating oil additives.

    Abstract: Complex substituted alkylene polyamines such as di(alkenyl-succinimide) of N1,N3 symmetrical bis(aminopolyazalkylene) ureas that react with boric acid in oil solution either with low boric acid utilization efficiency or react to form a hazy product whose haze cannot be removed by filtration are readily converted to the desired oil solution of boron and nitrogen containing products by first preparing an oil solution of super boron containing product of the complex substituted alkylene polyamine, combining the oil solution of super boron containing product with oil solution of the complex substituted alkylene polyamine and equilibrating the resulting mixture to a uniform boron to nitrogen content throughout.
