Abstract: A lubricant composition comprises a major proportion of a normally liquid hydrocarbon or other lubricating oil, such as synthetic oils of the alkylene oxide type or the polycarboxylic acid ester type, and 0,002 to 25% a lubricant additive prepared by reacting the hydrolysate of a phosphorus sulphide-hydrocarbon reaction product with an acid mixture comprising 0,1 to 5,0 moles of boric acid per mole of phosphorus in said reaction product and either 0,1 to 10,0 moles of a polymerization product of an unsaturated fatty acid per mole of phosphorus in said reaction product, the polymerization product having a molecular weight of 300 to 2,000, or 1 to 30 parts by weight of petroleum sulphonic acid per part by weight of phosphorus in said reaction product, and 0,8 to 5,0 moles of a basic alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compound per mole of phosphorus, at 120 DEG to 400 DEG F. in the presence of an aliphatic alcohol-containing solvent, the aliphatic alcohol having a boiling point below 350 DEG F. and the amount of the basic compound being at least sufficient to neutralize the acids. Other additives such as viscosity index improvers, anti-foaming agents, pourpoint depressors and extreme pressure agents may be incorporated. Concentrates of a suitable oil base containing 15 to 50% of the above described additive can be used for blending with hydrocarbon oils or other normally liquid lubricating oils. p ALSO:A lubricant oil additive is made by reacting the hydrolysate of a phosphorus sulphide-hydrocarbon reaction product with an acid mixture comprising 0,1 to 5,0 moles of boric acid per mole of phosphorus in said reaction product and either 0,1 to 10,0 moles of a polymerization product of an unsaturated fatty acid per mole of phosphorus in said reaction product, the polymerization product having a molecular weight of 300 to 2,000, or 1 to 30 parts by weight of a petroleum sulphonic acid per part by weight of phosphorus in said reaction product, and 0,8 to 5,0 moles of a basic alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compound per mole of phosphorus in said reaction product at a temperature of 120 DEG F. to 400 DEG F., in the presence of an aliphatic alcohol-containing solvent, the aliphatic alcohol having a boiling point below 350 DEG F. and the amount of basic compound being sufficient at least to neutralize the acids. The hydrolysed phosphorus sulphide hydrocarbon reaction product may be made by heating a normally liquid hydrocarbon with a phosphorus sulphide, e.g. P2S3, P4S3, P4S7 or, preferably, P2S5, at 200 DEG F. to 600 DEG F. and hydrolysing the product. Suitable normally liquid hydrocarbons are monoolefine hydrocarbon polymers or copolymers of M.W. of 150 to 50,000, particularly polymers of a mixture of isobutene, butenes and butanes from petroleum gases; bright stock residuums, lubricating oil distillates, petrolatums or paraffin waxes; olefines of at least 20 carbon atoms. The boric acid, in amounts of 0,1 to 5,0 moles per mole of phosphorus, may be added as such or made in situ. The petroleum sulphonic acids are obtained by sulphuric acid treatment of petroleum lubricating oil fractions. The polymerized fatty acids are those made from mono-carboxylic acids of 16 to 26 carbon atoms, preferably a mixture comprising 45 to 55% of a monomer and dimer fraction of linoleic acid and 45 to 55% of a trimer and higher polymers. The basic alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compound may be an oxide, hydroxide, carbonate or sulphide of lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, barium or strontium. The aliphatic alcohol is preferably a saturated aliphatic alcohol having 1 to 7 carbon atoms. Preferably the hydrolysed phosphorus sulphide reaction product, the boric acid and the petroleum sulphonic acid or polymerized fatty acid are heated in the presence of the aliphatic alcohol-containing solvent until reaction is complete and the basic compound is introduced for neutralization.ALSO:A lubricant oil additive is made by reacting the hydroylsate of a phosphorus sulphide-hydrocarbon reaction product with an acid mixture comprising 0.1 to 5.0 moles of boric acid per mole of phosphorus in said reaction product and either 0.1 to 10.0 moles of a polymerization product of an unsaturated fatty acid per mole of phosphorus in said reaction product, the polymerization product having a molecular weight of 300 to 2000, or 1 to 30 parts by weight of a petroleum sulphonic acid per part by weight of phosphorus in said reaction product, and 0.8 to 5.0 moles of a basic alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compound per mole of phosphorus in said reaction product at a temperature of 120 DEG F. to 400 DEG F., in the presence of an aliphatic alcohol-containing solvent, the aliphatic alcohol having a boiling point below 350 DEG F. and the amount of basic compound being sufficient at least to neutralise the acids. Abstract: 1,186,523. Detergent type lubricating oil additives. STANDARD OIL CO. 19 June, 1967 [20 June, 1966], No. 28178/67. Headings C5D and C5F. An overbased preferentially oil-soluble alkaline earth metal salt of an organic sulphonic acid useful as a lubricating oil additive is produced in a method comprising introducing into a mixture of (a) a neutral alkaline earth metal salt of an organic sulphonic acid, (b) an alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide and (c) lower alkanol, gaseous C0 2 in an amount sufficient to convert the alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide to carbonates, and ammonia in an amount sufficient to form from 0.01 to 0'2 mole ammonium carbamate per mole of sulphonate group. As sulphonic acid there may be used among others dilauryl benzene sulphonic acid, lauryl cetyl benzene sulphonic acid, paraffinsubstituted benzene sulphonic acids and polyolefine alkylated sulphonic acids. Suitably calcium or magnesium oxide is employed as alkaline earth metal oxide.
