Abstract: A liquid mixture is separated into two fractions by thermal diffusion by passing a stream of the mixture through a substantially horizontal slit between two closely-spaced walls maintained at different temperatures, the feed rate to one end of the slit being greater than that which would give the same degree of separation as a centrefeed vertical counter-current operation under the same conditions; the two fractions flow concurrently through the slit and are removed separately at the other end. As shown, liquid flows from feed pipe 22 through slit 10 between two walls 11, 12, which are heated and cooled respectively by coils 14, 16; each fraction is withdrawn through a transverse channel 24, holes 26, a flow equalizing passage 27, and line 29. Slits may be arranged in parallel and one or both of the fractions obtained may be passed to further slits to effect separation in a two or three stage process with recycling. A suitable slit width is less than about 0.15 inch and either the upper or lower wall may be at a higher temperature than the other. Graphs show the relationship between feed rate, degree of separation, and thermal efficiency for a single, two, or three stage process, and for centre-feed vertical countercurrent operation. Reference is made to the separation of mixtures of toluene and methylcyclohexane, cetane and monomethylnaphthalene, amyl stearate and methylnaphthalene, and of a lubricating oil into dark and light components; in the concentration of vitamins, isotopes, and viruses, the enriched fraction is removed at a lower rate than the other fraction.
