An overbased preferentially oil-soluble alkaline earth metal salt of an organic sulphonic acid useful as a lubricating oil additive is produced in a method comprising introducing into a mixture of (a) a neutral alkaline earth metal salt of an organic sulphonic acid, (b) an alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide and (c) lower alkanol, gaseous C0 2 in an amount sufficient to convert the alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide to carbonates, and ammonia in an amount sufficient to form from 0.01 to 0'2 mole ammonium carbamate per mole of sulphonate group. As sulphonic acid there may be used among others dilauryl benzene sulphonic acid, lauryl cetyl benzene sulphonic acid, paraffinsubstituted benzene sulphonic acids and polyolefine alkylated sulphonic acids. Suitably calcium or magnesium oxide is employed as alkaline earth metal oxide.
