    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maximize the formation of 1,4-butane diol while minimizing the formation of gamma-butyrolactone by forming a catalyst by making carbon carry palladium, or the like, and bringing this catalyst into contact with hydrogen-containing gas to form a precursor possible to hydrogenate and catalytically hydrogenating this precursor. SOLUTION: A catalyst is formed by making carbon carry all of about 0.1-20 wt.% of palladium, about 0.1-20 wt.% of silver, about 0.1-20 wt.% of rhenium and about 0.1-5 wt.% of at least one of aluminum, cobalt and a mixture of them. 1,4-Butane diol is produced by bringing hydrogen-containing gas into contact with this catalyst to form a precursor possible to hydrogenate and catalytically hydrogenating the precursor. At this time, the precursor is set to at least one compd. selected from maleic acid, succinic acid, gamma- butyrolactone, and the like. By this constitution, the formation of 1,4-butane diol is maximized and the formation of gamma-butyrolactone is minimized.
