Abstract:
IMPACT-RESITANT POLYMERS HAVING LOW PERMEABILITY TO GASES AND VAPORS ARE PREPARED BY POLYMERIZING AN OLEFINIC NITRILE, SUCH AS ACRYLONITRILE, OPTIONALLY WITH AN OLEFINIC ESTER, SUCH AS METHYL ACRYLATE, IN AN AQUEOUS MEDIUM IN THE PRESENCE OF A RUBBERY POLYBUTADIENE OR RUBBERY COPOLYMER OF BUTADIENE AND STYRENE.
Abstract:
(5115) RUBBER-MODIFIED HIGH NITRILE COPOLYMERS WITH IMPROVED IMPACT RESISTANCE The inclusion of a small amount of an ester-type plasticizer in the rubber polymerization recipe in the production of rubber-modified high nitrile copolymer resins produces resins having markedly improved impact resistance at both low and high temperatures.
Abstract:
A polymerization process is described in which impact resistant methacrylonitrile homopolymers and copolymers are prepared in the presence of a diene rubber by free radical polymerization at improved rates by conducting the polymerization in aqueous emulsion in the presence of some preformed seed polymer having small particle size.

1444292 Graft polymers STANDARD OIL CO 26 March 1974 [17 May 1973] 13319/74 Heading C3G A graft polymer is produced by polymerizing 100 parts by weight of (A) at least 70% by weight of an olefinically unsaturated nitrile and (B) up to 30%, by weight based on the weight of (A) plus (B), of an ester having the structure wherein R 1 is -H, C 1 to C 4 -alkyl or halogen, and R 2 is C 1 to C 6 -alkyl, allyl or an epoxy group having 2 to 6 carbon atoms in the presence of 1 to 40 parts by weight of (C) a rubbery copolymer of 5 to 25% of polymerized butadiene and/or isoprene and 95 to 75% of polymerized ester having the said structure as above. Examples are given in which acrylonitrile and methyl acrylate are grafted in aqueous emulsion on to a copolymer of butadiene, glycidyl acrylate and n-butyl acrylate or ethyl acrylate or of butadiene, allyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate.
