Abstract: A five-grade motor oil composition for gasoline internal combustion engines having improved oil consumption and low-temperature cranking characteristics comprises a base oil blend of two solvent extracted neutral mineral oils and a dewaxed and dearomatized catalytically cracked mineral oil stock, in combination with suitable lube oil additives. The finished oil formulation meets the requirements for a SAE 5W-40 motor oil.

A blended base oil for use as the main constituent in a 5-grade 10W50 motor oil consists of a mixture of solvent extracted neutral oils of 100 SSV and 300 SSV viscosity or 100‹ F. in a ratio of SEN 100 to SEN 300 of 3À63-3À72:1, and 30-35 wt. per cent dewaxed aromatic-free catalytically cracked oil stock. The blended base oil may be used in the motor oil in amount 23-40% by volume and the motor oil may contain an acrylate copolymer VI improver and a detergent comprising an ashless succinimide and zinc dithiophosphate.
