Abstract: Polyarylenes prep. by either 1) polycondensing with dehydrogenation of partially hydrogenated aromatic cpds. using a catalyst at >=400 degrees C and >=42 kg/cm2 in presence of H2, or 2) reacting aromatic cpds. at a mixture of aromatic and partially hydrogenated aromatic cpds. with a catalyst of 200-700 degrees C at 42-140 kg/cm2 in presence of H2. Combine good high temperature stability with good solubility and fusibility, and are free of chloride and other impurities.

Abstract: Branched polyphenylenes contg. 15-25 wt.% benzene rings linked to >=3 other benzene rings, 45-65 wt.% benzene rings linked to >=2 other benzene rings, 15-30 wt.% benzene rings linked to two other benzene rings at the meta positions; other benzene rings in the chain being fixed solely to one other benzene ring. Improved heat stability with good fusibility and solubility, and free of chlorine and other impurities. Useful as ablatives and mixed with carbon fibres.
