    Abstract: Title compds. (I) were manufd. by contacting unsatd. org. compds. with O2 at 250-600≦̸C in the presence of catalyst(II; A = Nb, Zr, Ti, Ta; E = hydrazinehydrate, Mo powder, W, Mg, Al, or Ni; a = 0.01-6, C = 0-0.2, e,f = 1-9; X = Number which satisfies other element's valence). Thus, passing 73:1 air-C4H10 over this catalyst at 419≦̸C gives I with conversion 75.37%.

    Abstract: Maleic anhydride was prepd. by oxydation of n-butane, n-butene, 1,3-butadiene or these compd.'s mixt. with O2 at 250 - 600≦̸C vapor phase in the presence of improved catalyst which was composed of oxide of Ti and P necessarily and didn't comprised Ba. Thus, titanium dioxide 19.98 g, 85.4% phosphoric acid 28.69 g, vanadium pentoxide 84.2 g and distilled water 600 ml were mixed to make slurry. This aq. slurry was refluxed for 2 hr, evapd., dried at 110≦̸C for 12 hr, calcined at 427≦̸C for 2 hr and crushed to 10 - 30 mesh to give Til.OP1.0-Ox useful catalyst.

    Abstract: Maleic anhydride is produced by the oxidation of 1,3-butadiene, n-butylenes, crotonaldehyde and furan with molecular oxygen in the vapor phase in the presence of catalytic oxides of antimony, molybdenum, at least one element selected from the group consisting of niobium, zirconium, titanium and tantalum and optionally a reducing agent capable of reducing at least part of the molybdenum in the catalyst to a valence state below +6 selected from the group consisting of hydrazine hydrate, molybdenum, tungsten, magnesium, aluminum, and nickel. This catalyst may optionally contain one or more elements selected from the group consisting of Li, Ag, Ce, Cd, Co, As, Si, Zn, Ge, Bi, Ru, Pt, U, Al and Ni. Especially desirable yields of maleic anhydride are obtained from 1,3-butadiene in the presence of a catalyst wherein molybdenum metal is used as a reducing agent.

    Abstract: Vanadium-free catalysts consisting essentially of oxides of titanium and phosphorus have been found to be especially effective in the oxidation of n-butane, n-butenes and 1,3-butadiene with molecular oxygen in the vapor phase to yield maleic anhydride. The reaction with n-butane gives an especially pure product in good yield and selectivity.
