HIGH PRESSURE FACILITATED MEMBRANES FOR SELECTIVE SEPARATION AND PROCESS FOR THE USE THEREOF

    Abstract: The subject invention relates to a process for the selective separation of at least one component of a gaseous feedstream comprising passing the feedstream containing the component through a separation unit, the separation unit containing a porous membrane having a feed side and a permeate side, and a pore size of from about 10Angstroms to about 200Angstroms, and having disposed in the pores of the porous membrane a facilitator liquid comprising a carrier dissolved in a suitable solvent, including: a) dissolving the component in the facilitator liquid on the feed side of the porous membrane at the feed gas/membrane interface; b) forming a component-carrier complex; c) diffusing the complex to the permeate side of the porous membrane; and d) releasing the component from the carrier. The invention further relates to a membrane for the selective separation of at least one component of a gaseous feedstream comprising a porous membrane, having pores of from about 10Angstroms to about 200Angstroms, the pores containing a facilitator liquid having an affinity for the component to be selectively separated, the membrane being capable of operating at a transmembrane pressure of about 100psig to about 300psig. The subject invention also relates to use of the aboveidentified process and membrane for the separation of vapor phase olefins from olefin-containing feed streams.

    Abstract: A scrubbing process for high feed concentrations of different materials in liquid streams. The process calls for providing a porous membrane (11) in a cell (10), the mem­brane (11) having pores of sufficient dimension to allow passage of the different materials therethrough; providing a first stream (12) comprising the different materials in a liquid carrier, providing a second stream (13) comprising an affinity adsorbent in a second liquid carrier, wherein the affinity adsorbent has a dimension larger than that of the pores and has a preferred binding capacity for at least one but not all of the different materials; mixing the first and second streams together to form a composite mixture (14) wherein a portion of the different materials become bound to the affinity adsorbent and a portion of the different materials remain essentially unbound to the affinity adsorbent; and passing the composite mixture against a first side of the membrane while passing a liquid carrier (16) for any of the unbound material against a second side of the membrane to produce a first exit stream (19) containing the affinity adsorbent and a high concentration of at least one of the different materials and a second exit stream (18) containing the liquid carrier and a high concentration of at least one of the other different materials.

    Abstract: A process for the selective dialysis of liquid streams containing different materials comprises the steps of providing a porous membrane (10) in a cell (50), the membrane (10) having pores of sufficient dimension to allow passage of the different materials therethrough, circulating an affinity adsorbent stream (55) against a first side of the membrane, where the adsorbent has a dimension larger than that of the pores and has a binding capacity for at least one but not all of the different materials and, passing the liquid stream (52) containing the different materials against a second side of the membrane (10) whereby certain of the materials become bound to the adsorbent upon passing through the membrane (10) to the first side (55) thereof and become separated from others of the materials which can return to the second side (52) of the membrane (10). A separate stripping process (60) is also provided which can be employed in conjunction with the dialysis process (50) or alone where it is desirable to remove bound materials from an affinity adsorbent material.
