Abstract: Ammoxidation of propane or isobutane with NH3 and 02 using (1) a mole ratio of paraffin:NH3 in the range from 2 to 16 and a mole ratio of paraffin:O2 in the range 1 to 10 and (2) a mixture of particulate catalyst compositions, the first being especially effective to promote formation of an unsaturated nitrile and an olefin from the paraffin, and the second catalyst composition being especially effective to promote the conversion of the olefin to the unsaturated nitrile. Catalytic compositions useful in the process are disclosed.

Abstract: Ammoxidation of C3 to C5 paraffins with NH3 and O2 using (1) a mole ratio of paraffin:NH3 in the range from 2 to 16 and a mole ratio of alkane:O2 in the range 1 to 10 and (2) a mixture of particulate catalyst compositions, the first being especially effective to promote formation of an unsaturated nitrile and an olefin from the paraffin, and the second catalyst composition being especially effective to promote the conversion of the olefin to the unsaturated nitrile. Abstract: Disclosed is a process for making an alpha , beta -unsaturated mononitrile by the catalytic reaction of a paraffin containing 3-5 carbon atoms with molecular oxygen and ammonia by catalytic contact of the foregoing reactants in a reaction zone with a metal oxide catalyst containing the elements indicated by the empirical formula, Vv Aa DdSnm Sbn CucOx (formula 1> in the relative atomic proportions indicated by the subscripts, where A is selected from Te and Bi D is one or more optional elements selected from Mo, W, Ti, Ge, Ce, La, Cr, Mn, Mg, Ca, Co, Ni, Fe, Nb, Ta, Ag, Zn, Cd, B, P, Na, K and Cs, and a is 0.001 to 30 d is zero to 30 c is 0.001 to 30 m is 0.1 to 60 n is 0.1 to 60 n/v is > 12 and /= v + a + c + d, and x is determined by the valence requirements of the elements present, and wherein the reactants fed to the reaction zone contain a mole ratio of said paraffin:NH3 in the range from 2 to 16 and a mole ratio of said paraffin:O2 in the range from 1 to 10.

In one embodiment, the VO(O2) ion is made by reacting H2O2 with a vanadium compound. Also disclosed is making a catalyst by drying and calcining such precursor. When the drying is effected by spray drying a new microspheroidal catalyst is produced. The catalysts useful for ammoxidation of propane are more attrition resistant than catalysts of the same empirical formula made by prior art methods.

Abstract: Disclosed is a process for making an activated antimony and vanadium-containing catalyst in oxide form having an atomic ratio of Sb:V in the range from 0.8-4, which comprises calcining such an oxidic vanadium and antimony-containing composition at a temperature of over 750 DEG C, and thereafter contacting said calcined catalyst with a hydroxy compound in liquid form selected from (1) cyclohexanol, (2) cyclopentanol, (3) a monohydroxy, acyclic hydrocarbon having 1-8 C atoms, and (4) a dihydroxy, acyclic hydrocarbon having 2-4 carbon atoms, and separating as a liquid said compound from said catalyst insofar as it is present beyond the amount wetting said catalyst, and thereafter drying said catalyst.
