Abstract: A novel catalyst composition useful in hydroformylation reactions comprises cobalt carbonyl and a porphyrin promoter ligand. Aldehydes may be manufactured in increased yield at less severe operating conditions by contacting an olefinically unsaturated compound, carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of such catalyst. A representative porphyrin promoter ligand is meso-tetra-(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin. Where acrylonitrile is used as the olefinically unsaturated compound, the product is 3-cyanopropionaldehyde.

Abstract: A process for the selective hydrocarboxylation of propylene to produce predominantly isobutyric acid in the liquid phase comprising reacting propylene, carbon monoxide and water at a temperature of from 75 DEG C to 150 DEG C and at a pressure of 250 psi (17.5 kg/cm ) to 5000 psi (350 kg/cm ) in the presence of a suitable solvent and a catalyst comprising palladium or a palladium compound, a phosphoamine promoter ligand compound and a hydrogen halide. In this way better yields of isobutyric acid are obtained.

Abstract: A process for the selective hydrocarboxylation of propylene to produce predominantly isobutyric acid in the liquid phase is provided. The reaction of propylene, carbon monoxide and water wherein a water to propylene ratio is maintained of from about 0.01 to a value less than 1.0 is effected at a temperature of about 75 DEG C. to about 150 DEG C. and at a pressure of about 250 psi to about 5000 psi in the presence of a carboxylic acid solvent and a catalyst comprising a coordinating palladium compound, an organo-arsine and a hydrogen halide.
