Abstract: An attrition-resistant oxidation catalyst comprising antimony oxide and at least one other metal oxide, where the metal may be U, Fe, Mn, Th, Ce, Mo, Sn is prepared by activating a catalyst comprising the combined oxides in an oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature of from 800-2000 DEG F., reducing the product to a powder, mixing the powder with water and an inert carrier material, drying, and heating the mixture preferably in a non-reducing or inert atmosphere at a temperature of from 750-2000 DEG F. The carrier material may be a silica sol derived from water glass or other silicates or silicon halides; phosphates of B, Al, Zr are also mentioned. Silica may be incorporated in the oxide mixture before activating at 800-2000 DEG F. Examples refer to oxides of (1) Sb+U, (2) Sb+Fe, (3) Sb+Th, (4) Sb+Ce, (5) Sb+Mo, (6) Sb+Mn, (7) Sb+Sn; all with SiO2 as carrier. The average particle size suitable for use in fluidized beds is stated to be below 20m . Extrudates of 4 mm. are also mentioned.
