Abstract: 1,238,138. Accumulator electrodes. STANDARD OIL CO. 19 Feb., 1970 [20 March, 1969], No. 7976/70. Heading H1B. A positive accumulator electrode 12 contains carbon and tellurium. It may comprise active carbon and a carbon-tellurium complex formed electrolytically in the cell. The cell may also comprise an electrode 11, of aluminium-lithium alloy, a glass or stainless steel container 18, a graphite current collector 13, a steel current collector 14 and a plug 15, of ceramic material, e.g. lava. The electrolyte may be a molten eutectic mixture of LiCl and KC1 and the atmosphere in the cell may be argon. The carbon may be derived by charring a carbonaceous material, e.g. coal or a synthetic resin such as polyvinylidene chloride. It may be bound together with a synthetic resin, e.g. a phenol-formaldehyde resin. The tellurium may be welded to the carbon or to the electrolyte as a tellurium compound, e.g. K 2 Te or K 2 TeO 4 , and moved into the electrode and converted into active form by cycling the cell. The lithium may be introduced into a pure aluminium electrode by cycling it in molten LiCl.
