Abstract: An element for use in an electrochemical cell has a first zone for introducing an oxygen-containing gas and a second zone separated from first zone by the element, which has a membrane with first and second surfaces, conducts oxygen ions therebetween, and has a catalyst exposed to at least the first zone. The element may be used to separate oxygen.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To form a gas-impervious solid multi-component membrane by film- forming a multi-phase mixture obtained by mixing an electronically conductive material such as Ag, Au, Pt with an oxide of La, Ce, Pr or the like and after that, heating it at >=500 deg.C. CONSTITUTION: The multi-phase mixture is prepared by mixing one or more kinds of the electronically conductive materials such as Ag, Au, Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, an electronically conductive mixed metal oxide of a perovskite structure or the like with one or more kinds of oxygen ion-conductive materials such as La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb or their oxides, an oxygen ion-conductive mixed metal oxide of the perovskite structure or the like. The intimate gas- impervious solid multi-component membrane is obtained by forming the multi- phase mixture into a prescribed shape and after that, heating it at >=500 deg.C.
