Abstract: (5403) Isobutyraldehyde is oxidized to methacrylic acid by contacting gaseous isobutyraldehyde with molecular oxygen at oxidative conditions in the presence of a catalyst of the empirica1 formula: Mo12 P0.1-3 CU0.01-2 V0.01-3 Mo.1-3 M'0.01-2 Ox where M is at least one of K, Rb, Cs and T1; M' is at least one of Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Nb and Sb; and x is a positive number that satisfies the valence requirements of the other elements present.
