Abstract:
Surfactants and solvents containing derivatized adducts formed from Diels-Aider reactions of terpenes and unsaturated carboxylic acids or their derivatives are disclosed. Processes for making and derivatizing the Diels-Aider adducts are also disclosed. In some embodiments, the Diels-Aider adducts are prepared by reacting farnesene or myrcene with an unsaturated carboxylic acid or its ester or anhydride. In other embodiments, the Diels-Aider adducts are prepared by reacting farnesene or myrcene with an unsaturated nitrile. The Diels-Aider adducts are then derivatized in a variety of ways to form the anionic, cationic, amine oxide, amphoteric or nonionic surfactants.
Abstract:
Fatty amide compositions and their derivatives are disclosed. The fatty amides comprise a reaction product of a metathesis-derived C 10 -C 17 monounsaturated acid, octadecene-1,18-dioic acid, or their ester derivatives with a primary or secondary amine. Derivatives made by reducing, quaternizing, sulfonating, alkoxylating, sulfating, and sulfitating the fatty amide are also included. The amine reactant can be diethylenetriamine or (2-aminoethyl)ethanolamine, which provide imidazoline amides or esters, respectively. In one aspect, the ester derivative of the C 10 -C 17 monounsaturated acid or octadecene-1,18-dioic acid is a lower alkyl ester. In other aspects, the ester derivative is a modified triglyceride made by self-metathesis of a natural oil or an unsaturated triglyceride made by cross-metathesis of a natural oil with an olefin. The compositions are valuable for cleaners, fabric treatment, hair conditioning, personal care, antimicrobial compositions, agricultural uses, and oil field applications.
Abstract:
A process for enzymatic production of glyceride compositions, specifically industrially practicable production of triglycerides, including conjugated linoleic and linolenic acid triglycerides, and the compositions produced by such process. An enzymatic reaction zone is first utilized, in which a mixture of glycerol and fatty acids or fatty acid derivatives is reacted in the presence of an enzymatic catalyst to form 1,3 diglycerides. The mixture is then circulated through a second thermal rearrangement zone, maintained at a higher temperature, to promote rearrangement of the 1,3 diglycerides to 1,2 diglycerides. Triglycerides are produced by re-circulating the mixture through the enzymatic production zone.
Abstract:
A fabric conditioning active composition comprising an esterquat mixture of quaternised mono- di- and tri-esters of alkanolamine in which the tri-esterquat content of the quaternised esterquat mixture is from 25 to 50% by weight of said esterquat mixture. Additionally, (i) when the triesterquat content is from 25 to 30% by weight of said esterquat mixture the free amine content of the composition is less than 0.5% by weight on the weight on said esterquat mixture, and (ii) when the tri-esterquat content is more than 30% by weight of said esterquat mixture the free amine content of the composition is less than 6% by weight based on the weight of said esterquat mixture. The composition may contain less than 1% by weight of free fatty acid based on said esterquat mixture.
Abstract:
Esteramine compositions and their derivatives are disclosed. The esteramines comprise a reaction product of a metathesis-derived C 10 -C 17 monounsaturated acid, octadecene-1,18-dioic acid, or their ester derivatives with a tertiary alkanolamine. Derivatives made by quaternizing, sulfonating, alkoxylating, sulfating, and/or sulfitating the esteramines are also disclosed. The esteramines and derivatives are valuable for a wide variety of end uses, including cleaners, fabric treatment, hair conditioning, personal care (liquid cleansing products, conditioning bars, oral care products), antimicrobial compositions, agricultural uses, and oil field applications.
Abstract:
Liquid cleaning compositions are described that comprise sulfo-estolide (SE) salts, particular sodium, lithium or ammonium salts of sulfo-estolides, and alkyl ester sulfonates. The liquid cleaning compositions are clear, stable and substantially free of precipitates due to the use of sodium, lithium or ammonium salts of sulfo-estolide rather than a potassium sulfo-estolide salt in the composition. The liquid cleaning compositions also have a total combined amount of saturated C16 and C18 fatty acids of less than about 5% by weight to prevent the formation of precipitates in the composition.
Abstract:
A process to manufacture conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)-containing materials including conjugated linoleic salts and acids that are enriched in desirable cis-9, trans-11- and trans-10, cis-12-CLA isomers and are low in certain undesirable isomers. The process generally entails isomerization of an alkyl ester of a linoleic acid-containing material, such as sunflower oil or safflower oil, to effectuate conjugation of the double bonds, followed by saponification of the resultant CLA-containing fatty acid ester to produce a CLA-containing fatty acid salt, optionally followed by neutralization of the CLA-containing fatty acid salt with an acid source to produce a CLA-containing fatty acid.

Abstract:
A process for preparing conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) or derivatives thereof from ricinoleic acid, lower alkyl esters of ricinoleic acid, or salts thereof. The CLA is formed by reacting a carboxylic acid, or anhydride, anhydride equivalent, or ester thereof with the ricinoleic acid or derivative to form an intermediate having a carboxylic ester at the 12-hydroxy position of the ricinoleic acid or derivative, and reacting the intermediate with a base to form a cis-9, trans-11 conjugated linoleic acid.
