Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To modify a cup container made of a fiber-based material such as packaging board, allowing the lid to be reliably heat-sealed to the mouth of the cup without jeopardizing the product to be contained.SOLUTION: The invention relates to a cup container made of a fiber-based material, such as polymer-coated packaging board, comprising a cup 1 containing a contained product 2 and a lid 6 closing the mouth of the cup. The cup 1 has a collar 5 bent downwardly from the mouth of the cup and diverging from the cup skirt 3, and the lid 6 has a rim 8 oriented accordingly downwardly from the collar, the lid being fixed in position by heat-sealing between the collar and rim parts. For opening the container, the lid 6 can be equipped with a tear strip 11 surrounding its rim 8. In addition, the lid 6 may be nested with the cup 1, so that compression and friction between their opposite surfaces retain the lid in position in the reclosed container.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method of manufacturing board (2), a board provided by the method, and a container formed from the same, such as a disposable drinking cup. According to the invention, fibre-based stock is doped with a polymer (6), ending in a pulp web that is formed of this pulp on a board machine wire, and in a board layer (3) that is obtained from the same by pressing and drying. When the board layer is heated, the polymer melts and water vapour bubbles penetrate it, rendering the layer porous. The polymer used for the doping can comprise, for example, a low density polyethylene (LDPE) that has a melt viscosity of about 15. Pore-generating heating can be carried out for the board or only for the container manufactured from it. The porous layer prevents the hot drink enjoyed from the cup from burning the fingers of the user.

The invention relates to a polymer-coated packaging material, a method of manufacturing the same, and products, such as a disposable drinking cup, made from the material. The packaging material comprises a fibrous base (1) of paper or board and an extruded polymer layer (2) containing a blend of (i) 0 to 25 wt-% of a branched low-density polyethylene (LDPE)with a lower melt viscosity and (ii) 75 to 90 wt-% of a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) with a higher melt viscosity. The packaging material of the invention comprises multilayer coatings, e.g. an adhesive innermost and a heat-sealable outermost layer (2, 4) of said blend and a vapour barrier middle layer (3) of at most 90 wt-% of high density polyethylene (HDPE). The layers (2, 3, 4) are brought and adhered to the fibrous base (1) by coextrusion. To maximize renewability of the materials HDPE and LLDPE as used for the structure are of biologic origin.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method of treating chemical pulp fibers by a polymerizing hydroxy acid, the fibers thus obtained and the products refined from them. In the method, the hydroxy acid reacts with the reactive groups of the fibers in the presence of a catalyst, forming ester bonds. The following units of the same hydroxy acid are oligomerized and/or polymerized to these grafted acid residues. The fibers thus treated and the products refined thereof endure better processing stages that include drawing and stretching than untreated fibers.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for digitally printing a polymer-coated paper or board (1), to a paper or board suitable for the method and to the production of a product package equipped with digital prints. During digital printing, printing ink particles are applied in an electric field to the printing surface formed of a polymer coating at locations corresponding to the print, and the printing ink is adhered to the printing surface by fusion with the aid of infrared radiation. In accordance with the invention, the paper or board (2) to be printed is equipped with an inner coating layer (3) containing electrically chargeable ethene acrylate copolymer, such as ethene methyl acrylate copolymer (EMA), and with a polyolefin-based outer shield layer (4) on top of this, which contains e.g. low-density polyethene (LDPE) and provides mechanical strength, forming the printing surface receiving the printing ink.

The invention relates to a cup package made of a fibre-based material and to a method for manufacturing it. The package comprises a cup (1) for the product (9) to be packaged and a lid (2) for closing the cup mouth. In accordance with the invention, the lid is partially nested in the cup, the adhesion between the inner surface of the cup and the lid retaining the lid in position. Adjacent beads, such as mouth rolls (5, 8) have been formed at the mouth of the cup and the edge of the lid, the beads acting as solder bases for the user's fingers/when the package is opened. The lid can be formed by connecting a discoid centre (6) and a surrounding frame (7) and by equipping the frame with a mouth roll by a technique corresponding to the manufacture of a cup formed of a bottom (4) and a mantle (3) connected to this.
