Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed for reprofiling a surface (e.g., the cornea of the eye) by ablation. The apparatus is positioned between a source of ablative radiation and a surface so that the exposure area of the surface to which the radiation is delivered may be varied. In one embodiment, a masking means having apertures of predefined shapes is provided to selectively pass a portion of the radiation and drive means is employed to move the masking means across the beam of radiation in two different directions, thereby effecting two patterns of ablation at the surface, such that the cumulative effect of these two patterns is the selective ablation and reshaping of the surface.
