Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a telephone set or a TV remote controller in which an optical scanner is built in to read out symbol information expressed by a bar code. CONSTITUTION: An optical scanner 1 built in a telephone set 6 capable of reading out symbol information such as a telephone number, an address and a credit card number respectively expressed by bar codes can be used also for autodialing, mail-order selling, selling information collection, stock management, and so on. In the other embodiment, a bar code scanner built in a TV remore controller can read out program starting time or the like from a bar code symbol printed on a TV guide. Scanned information is stored in a memory, and when the program starting time arrives, user's attention is awakened by a beep tone. When the user replines the beep tone by depressing a key, a TV is turned on and the user can see the program. When there is no reply, the program is automatically recorded in a video recorder.
