CONSTITUTION: These device and method stop the scanner 10 after a prescribed time when no mark is read by the scanner 10 and energize the scanner 10 thereafter. A shadow photosensor 60 operated so as to detect the intensity change of ambient light at the part of a window 18 for scanning and re-energize the scanner 10 by the detection is provided on the part of the window 18 for scanning.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To attain the reading of a bar code mark positioned far from a scanning head by arranging a detecting means in order to detect an light beam in a direction almost parallel to a laser beam radiated from the scanning head. CONSTITUTION: A reflected light passes through an output window 62 first, passes through a transmission filter 90 for a read laser beam, and is made incident to a pair of photodiodes 86 and 88. Those photodiodes 86 and 88 are attached with a distance on a fringe 40, and generate an analog electric signal. When the visual field of a scanning means is about 4 inches, the visual field can be completely captured by separating the photodiodes 86 and 88 by 2 inches. The photodiodes 86 and 88 are arranged in a body part 14 in order to detect a light reaching a head 10 in a direction almost along the longitudinal direction of the body part 14 from among the lights reflected by a bar code mark. Thus, the bar code marks positioned far from the scanning head can be read.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To increase the scanning speed by controlling a scanning motor by a motor control means provided with an energizing means, which energizes the shaft to the center position, and a driving means which repeatedly turns the shaft against the energizing force of the energizing means. CONSTITUTION: A motor control means 94 is provided with the driving means which gives an alternating magnetic field to a rotor 120 to repeatedly turn the rotor 120 in one direction from the rotor center position and the reverse direction against the energizing force of an energizing means 140, and the rotor 120 is rotated in each direction by an angle smaller than 360. Consequently, the rotor 120 of a scanning motor 68, a shaft 72, and a light reflection means 76 on the shaft 72 are energized to the center position by the energizing means 140, and the rotor 120 is repeatedly rotated against this energizing action when the motor control means 94 is operated. Thus, the speed of scanning for read is increased in comparison with a scanning means where the motor 68 is rotated in one direction.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To enhance the control performance of the laser beam in a high magnification recursive reflector by providing a means for increasing the visibility of the input laser beam. CONSTITUTION: A converging mirror 19a reflects a conical light converged in the head to a sensor means (photo sensor) 17 along an optical path 21b through a laser beam transmission member. The photo sensor 17 has a nearly rectangular opening in order to minimize the interference between the surrounding light and the return section of the reflective laser beam, and the longitudinal side of this opening is extended along and in the scanning direction to form a nearly non-circular visual field. Further, the laser beam is controllably positioned so as to fall in this noncircular visual field. With that, the laser beam control performance of a high magnitude recursive reflector can be enhanced.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To increase the focal depth as much as possible and to reduce the beam size in the focus position as much as possible by providing an optical means with a converging means and an aperture diaphragm which is arranged between a laser light source and a symbol part and closely to the converging means in the optical path. CONSTITUTION: An aperture diaphragm 56 which directly determines the beam size is arranged in the optical path of emission of laser light. The cross section of the aperture diaphragm is smaller than that of laser light in the position of the aperture diaphragm and is so constituted that a part of laser light from a laser light source 42 passes through but the other part is intercepted, and the optical system includes a converging lens 62 consisting of a piano-convex lens and the aperture diaphragm 56 which is arranged in the optical path closely to the converging lens 62. A part of the emitted laser diode beam is allowed to reach a symbol through this aperture diaphragm 56. Thus, convergence to a desired beam size is realized for a sufficient operation time by the simple constitution of the single lens.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve the reliability of a laser scanner for reading a bar code symbol by increasing the small amplitude of high frequency component of an analog signal while using a reinforcing means in order to reinforce the modulation of the analog signal. CONSTITUTION: This device is provided with light guiding means 33 and 34 for guiding light to a display in order to reflect the light, a means 19b for scanning the display along a scanning direction with sampling aperture larger than the width of one narrow element at least having a dimension along the scanning direction, a detecting means 17 for generating a modulation degraded analog electric signal having the high frequency component of small amplitude corresponding to a narrow element and the low frequency component of large amplitude corresponding to a wide element by detecting the beams having various values of strength reflected from the display along the scanning direction, and the reinforcing means for converting that signal to a modulation reinforced analog electric signal having the low frequency component and high frequency component mutually making much closer the values of large and small amplitudes by amplifying the modulation degraded electric signal. Thus, the modulation degraded analog signal can be read well and the reliability of the scanner can be improved.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To use a relatively small-sized laser light source to operate the device with a low voltage by providing a semiconductor laser diode which is supported on a laser scanning head and generates laser light and holding the scanning head in a position distant from a bar code to read the bar code. CONSTITUTION: A small-sized light source means for generation of laser light consists of a semiconductor laser diode 200 and is attached to a body part 14 with a supporting plate 30 between them by rubber bands 36 and 38. DC power of 12V for the laser diode 200 is led into the inner chamber of a handle part 12 through a cable 58. This 12V DC power supplies proper anode voltage and anode current to the anode of the laser diode 200. The cathode of the laser diode 200 is earthed. Thus, the device itself is small-sized and light-weight, and the laser diode is operated with a low-voltage power source, and therefore, the power source part is made light-weight and small-sized, and not only insulation is facilitated but also the device is made small-sized and light-weight furthermore.
