Abstract: A matrix comprising a water-insoluble beta -1,3-glucan gel in the shape of beads with diameters within the range of about 5 to 1000 mu is prepared by, for example, dispersing an alkaline aqueous solution of a water-soluble beta -1,3-glucan in a water-immiscible organic solvent, and adding an organic acid to the resultant dispersion. The matrix is useful as carrier materials for immobilized enzymes, affinity chromatography, gel filtration, ion exchange and other applications.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for synthesizing vitamin B1 in high yield, by reacting a propanenitrile compound with an amidine compound by the use of methanol as a solvent under pressure at a specific temperature and hydrolyzing. CONSTITUTION:A propanenitrile compound shown by formula I (R and R are lower alkyl) is reacted with an amidine compound shown by formula II (R is lower alkyl) are subjected to ring closure reaction in methanol as a solvent by the use of an autoclave under pressure (e.g. 1.5-4.0kg/cm G) approximately at 75-105 deg.C, preferably 80-100 deg.C. Then the prepared reaction solution is hydrolyzed to give a compound shown by formula III. The hydrolysis is carried out by distilling away methanol, adding an organic solvent to the residual solution, adding a proper amount of water to the solution of the organic solvent and pouring an acid. The amount of the methanol used is 1-20 times as much as the total amount of the raw materials shown by formula I and formula II by weight.
