Abstract: A peristaltic pump is provided, which may have auxiliary fluid introduction, for a plurality of resilient pump tubes progressively occluded concurrently along a portion of their lengths, recurringly, to advance fluids therethrough by a pressure roller assembly; and a control system for the pump to render the roller assembly inoperative to advance fluids. A platen is mounted for movement from an operative position, in which the pump tubes are engaged and sandwiched between the platen and the roller assembly, to an inoperative position in a direction away from the roller assembly. In the inoperative position of the platen, a tube or tubes of the auxiliary fluid introduction, which includes a pressure pin cooperating with a pad engageable with the tube or tubes therebetween, are released. The platen is power-operated to move to at least one of the two aforementioned positions thereof.

Abstract: 1,051,956. Sampling liquids. TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORPORATION. March 19 1965 [April 1, 1964], No. 11777/65. Heading B8N. A liquid-sample supply apparatus for supplying samples, e.g. blood, to an analysis apparatus comprises a support 22 for a plurality of containers 24, a liquid take-off means 50, 52 having a tube 68 for entry into the containers in order to remove a sample, a reservoir 160 for a wash liquid and means 114, 140, 144 to move the take-off means into and out of the reservoir so that liquid may flow therefrom through the tube under the control of a solenoidoperated valve 174. The take-off means includes a pair of arms 50, 52 connected at one end by a member 54 which serves to support the end of the tube 68; a pair of tubes are mounted in the member 54 and arranged so that they remove samples from different levels in the containers. The arms are also pivoted on a bracket 40 which is adapted to be rotated about a fixed shaft 32 by means of a lever 144 connected to a further lever 140 which is actuated under the control of a cam 150. The take-off means is raised and lowered by means of cam 114 engaging with a follower 96, 98 mounted in a slidable shaft 90 adapted to abut a shoe 106 clamped to the arm 50. The cam 114 is rotated by means of a motor 80 which also rotates, via gears 120, 134, a shaft 130 on which the cam 150 is mounted; shaft 130 also carries cams 202, 204, 206 for controlling switches 214, 216, 218 respectively in the circuit of the electric motor 80 and solenoid-operated valves 174, 177. In operation, with the take-off tubes 68 in the wash-liquid reservoir 160 a main switch is actuated so that, together with actuation of the switch 210 by its cam 204, the wash liquid is pumped through the tubes. After a certain time, determined by a cam in a timer, a switch in the timer is actuated thereby energizing the drive motor 80 and so causing the take-off tubes to be lifted from the wash-liquid reservoir, moved over the support 22 and lowered into a container 24, the solenoid valves 174, 177 being de-energized so that the flow of wash liquid is discontinued; four rows A, B, C; D of containers are provided in the support, the particular row into which the arms are required to be lowered being determined by the setting of a stop-pin 230 by means of a lever 229, Fig. 3 (not shown). Samples from the container are sucked via the pipes 68 into an analysis apparatus and, after a further interval, the pipes are raised and again lowered into the wash liquid; during this movement the support is indexed around to bring the next container into the correct position. In a modification, the four take-off tubes 564, 565, 566, 567, Fig. 9 (not shown), are provided on the arms 50 1 , so that a tube in each row A 1 , B 1 , C 1 and D 1 is sampled in one operation. In this embodiment the wash liquid stage is dispensed with.

Abstract: 1,111,630. Counting-apparatus. TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORPORATION 12 Dec., 1966 [5 Jan., 1966], No. 55478/66. Heading G4D. A liquid sample is analysed by passing a first portion through a flow-cell in one direction and a second portion through the flow-cell in the opposite direction. Blood samples in tubes 10 are connected sequentially to a pumping system whereby a first portion is mixed in coil 62 with air and a diluent before being passed through a valve system 94 in the position shown so as to pass downwards through a flow-cell 96. Photoelectric apparatus 98, 100 operates a counter 102 and recorder 104 to register the number of all cells, effectively the number of red cells. A second portion is mixed in coil 84 with acetic acid and tergitol to destroy the red cells before being passed through the flow-cell 96 in the opposite direction (Fig. 2, not shown), the photo-electric apparatus, with adjusted sensitivity, now counting only the white cells. The tubes may be cleansed between samples from a source 30.
