    Abstract: A system and a method to perform spectrum allocation in an optical network. In the system of the invention, said spectrum allocation is performed according to a control plane, said spectrum allocation comprises path and resource provision and further comprises spectrum optimization. The system is characterised in that said optical network is an elastic optical network comprising a plurality of elastic optical nodes and in that it comprises: - at least an elastic optical node controller in each of said elastic optical nodes for said path and resource provision, said path and resource provision at least comprising reserving resources and establishing a connection link between at least part of said plurality of elastic optical nodes; - protocol extensions for said control plane in order to at least perform said path and resource provision; and - an optical spectrum manager providing said spectrum optimization, connected to said plurality of elastic optical nodes, comprising adapting spectrum usage according to traffic measures carried out by a monitoring tool in said elastic optical network. The method is arranged for carrying out said path and resource provision and said spectrum optimization.
