    Abstract: A partial oxidation process for the production of a stream of hot clean gas substantially free from particulate matter, ammonia, alkali metal compounds, halides and sulfur-containing gas for use as synthesis gas, reducing gas, or fuel gas. A hydrocarbonaceous fuel comprising a solid carbonaceous fuel with or without liquid hydrocarbonaceous fuel or gaseous hydrocarbon fuel, wherein said hydrocarbonaceous fuel contains halides, alkali metal compounds, sulfur, nitrogen and inorganic ash containing components, is reacted in a gasifier by partial oxidation to produce a hot raw gas stream comprising H2, CO, CO2, H2O, CH4 NH3, HCl, HF, H2S, COS, N2, Ar, particulate matter, vapor phase alkali metal compounds, and molten slag. The hot raw gas stream from the gasifier is split into two streams which are separately deslagged, cleaned and recombined. Ammonia in the gas mixture is catalytically disproportionated into N2 and H2. The ammonia-free gas stream is then cooled and halides in the gas stream are reacted with a supplementary alkali metal compound to remove HCl and HF. Alkali metal halides, vaporized alkali metal compounds and residual fine particulate matter are removed from the gas stream by further cooling and filtering. The sulfur-containing gases in the process gas stream are then reacted at high temperature with a regenerable sulfur-reactive mixed metal oxide sulfur sorbent material to produce a sulfided sorbent material which is then separated from the hot clean purified gas stream having a temperature of at least 1000.degree.F.

    Abstract: A process for producing high purity hydrogen is disclosed. Specifically, the process includes (1) partially oxidizing either a refinery offgas feedstock or a gaseous hydrocarbonaceous feedstock, which contains a major component which includes at least one C1-C3 hydrocarbon and which has an average molecular weight of up to about 30, to produce a synthesis gas mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, (2) reacting the synthesis gas mixture with steam to convert the carbon monoxide into a raw gas mixture which primarily includes carbon dioxide and hydrogen, and (3) subjecting the raw gas mixture to pressure swing adsorption to purify the raw gas mixture, thereby producing high purity hydrogen and a reject gas mixture of impurities.

    Abstract: Prodn. of synthesis gas, fuel gas or reducing gas from a slurry of coal (or other ash-contg. solid carbonaceous fuel) is effected by reacting 75-95 wt.% of the C in the slurry with an O2-contg. gas in the presence of a temp. moderator in a free-flow, refractory-lined reaction zone of a gas generator at an autogenous temp. of 2350-2900 deg.F and a pressure of 10-200 atmos. to produce a hot gas stream contg. H2, CO and CO2, impurity gases and entrained solids, including carbon.S The hot gas is passed to a gas cooling zone including a radiant cooler having an unobstructed central passage, where the gas is (a) contacted with an aq.soln. of an alkali(ne earth) metal cpd. catalyst so that unconverted carbon reacts with steam generated from the aq. soln., and (b) cooled from 2300-2800 deg.F to 1350-1600 deg.F by indirect heat exchange with a coolant. A partially cooled gas contg. an increased amt. of H2 and COx is withdrawn.

    Abstract: 1437891 Secondary alkyl primary amines TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 18 Oct 1974 [26 Dec 1973] 45225/74 Heading C2C A process for producing secondary alkyl primary amines from n-paraffins having from 12 to 30 carbon atoms comprises: (a) nitrating a paraffin charge substantially free of sulphur compounds and converting from 5 to 50 weight per cent of said paraffin whereby to produce a liquid mixture containing paraffin, secondary mono-nitroparaffin and by-products; (b) hydrogenating the liquid mixture from step (a) to convert the secondary mono-nitroparaffin into secondary alkyl primary amine; (c) recovering the secondary alkyl primary amine formed in step (b) from the mixture of paraffin and by-products; (d) introducing an impure nparaffin feedstock having from 12 to 30 carbon atoms and containing from 20 to 2000 parts per million of sulphur as sulphur compounds and hydrogenating the feedstock in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst at a temperature of from 500‹ to 780‹ F.; (e) hydrogenating the mixture of paraffin and by-products from step (c); and (f) introducing the hydrogenated feedstock of step (d) and the hydrogenated mixture from step (e) as the paraffin charge to step (a).

    Abstract: 1383166 Hydrogenation of aromatic hydrocarbons TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 25 May 1973 [27 June 1972] 25276/73 Heading C5E Saturated cyclic hydrocarbons are produced from an aromatic feed by partially hydrogenating the feed in a first hydrogenation zone using a catalyst comprising an iron group metal (e.g. Ni) on a refractory inorganic oxide (e.g. alumina, silica, zirconia or magnesia) and then hydrogenating the effluent at a higher temperature in a second hydrogenation zone using a catalyst comprising a noble metal (e.g. 0À01-2 wt. per cent Pt) on a refractory inorganic oxide (e.g. alumina) containing 0À01-5 wt. per cent alkali metal. The aromatic feed can contain benzene, toluene or xylene and can be obtained by catalytic reforming followed by solvent extraction and contacting with a molecular sieve to remove water and n-paraffins. The hydrogen used can be purified cryogenically. The temperature in the first hydrogenation zone can be 200-480‹ F. and that in the second zone can be 480-675‹ F., the pressure in both zones is suitably 300-800 p.s.i.g. Saturated product can be recycled to the first and/or second zones and a portion of the aromatic feed can be passed directly into the second zone to facilitate temperature control. In the examples cyclohexane is produced from benzene.

    Abstract: 1357259 Alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 20 Sept 1972 [11 Nov 1971] 43457/72 Heading C5E Methylated aromatic hydrocarbons are made by (a) catalytically disproportionating toluene feed in the presence of H 2 in reactor 4, (b) fractionating in tower 8 to provide benzene, toluene, C 8 hydrocarbons, and C 9 and heavier hydrocarbon fractions (the latter containing ethylated aromatics) and recycling (via 12) the toluene fraction to (a), (c) catalytically disproportionating the C 8 fraction from (b) in reactor 20 in the presence of H 2 to form benzene, toluene, trimethyl benzenes, tetramethylbenzenes and ethylated aromatics, (d) fractionating in fractionator 26 the product from (c) into a C 6 -C 8 fraction, a C 9 fraction, and a C 10 and heavier fraction which latter is recovered, and recycling the C 6 -C 8 fraction via 30 to fractionator 8, (e) the C 9 fraction recovered from (d) being free from ethylated aromatics and preferably being fractionated to give xylenes, mesitylene, pseudo cumene and hemimellitene, which latter two can be recycled to step (c). The C 9 and heavier fractions of step (b) are withdrawn from fractionator (9) and de-ethylated in de-ethylator 70 to give benzene and methyl benzenes, together with the C 10 fraction from fractionator 26 which has been fractionated again in fractionator 52. The 188-195‹ C. boiling fraction from 52 is cooled to produce durene crystals. The disproportionation catalyst is preferably sulphided Group VIII metal on hydrogen mordenite and alumina.

    Abstract: The process produces a stream of hot clean gas substantially free from particulate matter, alkali metal compounds, hydrogen halides, hydrogen cyanide, sulfur-containing gases, and with or without ammonia for use as synthesis gas, reducing gas, or fuel gas. A pumpable fuel selected from liquid hydrocarbonaceous fuel or liquid emulsions thereof, an aqueous slurry of petroleum coke, and mixtures thereof and containing halides, alkali metal compounds, sulfur, nitrogen and inorganic ash, it reacted by partial oxidation to produce a hot raw gas stream comprising H2, CO, CO2, H2O, CH4, NH3, HCN, HC1, HF, H2S, COS, N2, Ar, particulate matter, vapor phase alkali metal compounds, and molten slag. The hot raw gas stream is cooled and cleaned. Optionally, ammonia is removed by being catalytically disproportionated into N2 and H2. The process gas stream is cooled and halides and HCN in the gas stream are reacted with a supplementary alkali metal compound to remove HC1, HF and HCN. Alkali metal halides and alkali metal cyanide, vaporized alkali metal compounds and residual fine particulate matter are removed by further cooling and filtering. The sulfur-containing gases in the process gas stream are then reacted at high temperature with a mixed metal oxide sulfur sorbent material to produce a sulfided sorbent material which is then separated from the hot clean purified gas stream having a temperature of at least 540 DEG C.
