    Abstract: A first protective cover (8) for the probe (2) of an infrared thermometer (1) comprises a thin sidewall (31) linked to a film window (10) by a collar structure (34). The collar structure (34) includes one or more of a sill (14), first fold (12) and second fold (16) that receive any forces applied to the sidewall (31) so as to prevent the translation of these forces into a stretching force applied against the window (10). A second protective cover (8) comprises a sidewall (31) between a window (10) and a cover retention rim (71) to retain the cover (8) with the window (10) positioned over the opening of probe (2). The cover retention rim (71) provides points of contact at two separate planar locations (90, 91) on the rim (71) with the probe (2) so as to form a snug fit that precludes vertical movement of the cover (8) after the cover (8) is installed on the probe (2).

    Abstract: This invention is an IR thermometer design using multiple sensor outputs for correcting errors induced by variable probe placement in a patient's ear canal. One embodiment of the system uses two or more sensors (32, 34) to create varying fields of view of the tympanic membrane IR emissions. These discrete IR readings are then reconciled by onboard signal processing to provide an accurate, repeatable and relatively position independent temperature reading.

    Abstract: A noncontact active infrared sensor (1) for measuring the temperature of a remote object is provided with bifurcated sensing elements (6, 7). A first element (6) is uniquely exposed to the remote object, thereby establishing a radiative flux. A second element (7) is configured in the same local environment as that of the first element (6) but isolated from radiation from the remote object. The heat transfer of both elements (6, 7) is compared and that component of heat transfer corresponding to flux with the remote object is isolated and converted into a temperature signal. The sensor system advantageously incorporates individual thermal control units (34, 38) onto both sensor elements (6, 7) to accurately control salient thermal transfers while thermally decoupling the sensor elements (6, 7). This provides for a more accurate reading of the temperature of the remote object.
