    Abstract: A tympanic IR thermometer (302) capable of resisting damage from a drop comprises an IR thermometer probe (214) having a reinforced speculum (200) for reception within a human ear near the tympanum, a metal brick (210) holding the probe (214) to the body of the IR thermometer (302), a barrel (204) within the speculum (200) acting as an infrared waveguide, an insulating and shock absorbing seal (202) surrounding the barrel (204), a window (206) within the barrel (204) remote from the end of the speculum (200) nearest the tympanum, a thermometer housing (300), an IR sensor, and electrical components to translate and display a signal generated by the IR sensor into a visible temperature reading.

    Abstract: A novel waveguide assembly (30) for use in an IR thermometer of the type used in measuring temperature of the tympanic membrane of the ear for body temperature determinations. The assembly (30) provides a unique arrangement of spacers (20) and a protective sheath (30) to create a durable yet inexpensive waveguide. The spacer (20) includes radially offset contact points (23) that induce moment arms to absorb shock and other forms of rough handling encountered in daily use.
