    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having a magnetic recording layer which consists of a thin film having low light transmissivity, good flatness and uniformity in thickness at the time of providing the magnetic recording layer on an undercoat layer. CONSTITUTION:This undercoat layer consisting of a coating film composition which contains a non-magnetic particle powder and a binder resin is formed on a non-magnetic substrate. The non-magnetic particle powder is produced as follows. An alkali aq. solution is added to an aq. liquid suspension contg. acicular alpha-Fe2O3 particles to adjust the pH value of the suspernsion to >=10, and then an aq. solution contg. Al and/or Si is added to this suspension. Subsequently, the pH of the resulting liquid suspension is adjusted to a nearly neutral value while stirring to rapidly precipitate hydroxide of Al and/or Si and thereafter the particles in the suspension is separated by filtration together with this hydroxide to obtain a mixture of the particles and the hydroxide. Then, this mixture is water washed and dried and the resulting mixture is subjected to compacting pulverization by using an edge runner to produce the objective non-magnetic particle powder consisting of the acicular alpha-Fe2O3 particles on the surface of which oxide or hydroxide of Al and/or Si is fixed.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject antiseismic substrate excellent in surface smoothness and mechanical strength by using granular non-magnetic BaO.4.5Fe2O3 powder. CONSTITUTION:This antiseismic non-magnetic substrate having the above- mentioned advantages is obtained by using non-magnetic granular powder consisting of BaO.4.5Fe2O3 non-magnetic granules prepared by sticking Al and/or Si hydroxide or oxide having both these elements onto the granule surface >=0.50 in the molecular weight-dependent parameter alpha in the relationship between polymer molecular weight (M) and saturated absorption (As): As=K1M [(a) means the molecular weight-dependent parameter alpha]. Specifically, the above non-magnetic powder is produced by the following processes: an aqueous alkaline solution is added to an aqueous suspension containing BaO.4.5Fe2O3 non- magnetic granules to bring the pH level of the suspension to >=10 followed by adding Al and/or Si compound(s) to the suspension to adjust its pH level to about 7 to rapidly precipitate Al and/or Si hydroxide or oxide, and this precipitate is washed and dried and then subjected to consolidated grinding.
