    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain cerium oxide composite particles, excellent in ultraviolet screening properties, hardly causing deterioration of other coexisting cosmetic substrates, hardly having optical activities, having slipping properties on the skin, and suitable for cosmetics providing beautiful finish. SOLUTION: This composite particles for cosmetics are obtained by covering 3-70 wt.% cerium oxide having 0.01-0.5 μm number average particle diameters and 0.7-0.15 half value width 2θ( deg.) at 28.6 deg. diffraction angle (111 plane) in the X-ray diffraction, on the surface of mother particles having 0.3-50 μm number average particle diameters.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the deterioration or the photoactivity of cosmetic, coating material and plastic caused by ultraviolet ray by specifying the number average particle diameter range of a primary particle and the half-value width range of angle of diffraction in X-ray diffraction to improve ultraviolet shielding property. SOLUTION: In a powder of cerium oxide, the number average particle diameter of the primary particle is controlled to 0.01-0.5 μm. If the particle diameter is below the lower limit, the probability of light transmission is increased to make the shielding property insufficient though the number of the particle is increased and if the particle diameter exceeds the upper limit, the number of the particle is decreased to make the shielding property insufficient though light is not transmitted to be scattered. And the half-value width 2δ (degree) of 28.6 deg. angle of diffraction (111 plane) in the X-ray diffraction is 0.7-0.15. In the range where the half-value width exceeds the upper limit, the crystallinity becomes insufficient to be nearly amorphous and in the range below the lower limit, the particle is over grown and in both case, ultraviolet ray is easily transmitted. The cerium oxide is blended to the coating material or the cosmetic in the form as the particle is and can be also blended in a paste-like or slurry like form.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain white cerium oxide powder effective in shielding UV by firing cerium oxide powder at a specified temp. in an oxidizing atmosphere. SOLUTION: A base such as an ammonia soln. is added to an aq. cerium salt sold. to neutralize the cerium salt soln. and to deposit a precipitate. This precipitate is crystallized by heating in an autoclave and the resultant intermediate product is dehydrated if necessary and is washed and dried to form yellowish cerium oxide powder.     Abstract: PURPOSE:To increase the permeability of the title membrane to specified proteins by forming the ultrafilter membrane from the graft polymer consisting of a polyacrylonitrile as the trunk and having a charged side chain. CONSTITUTION:The positively charged side chain such as a quaternary ammonium salt, a tertiary amine, or vinylpyridine or the negatively charged side chain such as sodium parasulfonate is graft-polymerized on polyacrylonitrile to obtain a graft copolymer. The copolymer is dissolved in a solvent, and the soln. is cast to obtain an ultrafilter membrane. The permeability of the obtained ultrafilter membrane to the specified proteins such as bovine serum albumin is increased.
