Abstract: NEW MATERIAL:A halogenated bis(4-phenoxyphenyl) ether expressed by the formula (X is halogen; a and d are 1-5: b and c are 1-4). EXAMPLE:Octadecabromobis(4-phenoxyphenyl) ether. USE:A flame retardant of polymer material having excellent heat resistancs and migration resistance. PREPARATION:Bis(4-phenoxyphenyl) ether is brominated in the presence of a proper catalyst by a halogenating reagent such as bromine, hydrogen bromide, chloride or chlorinating agent to provide the halogenated bis(4-phenoxyphenyl) ether expressed by the formula. Halogenation degree can be controlled by amount of halogenation reagent and kind of Lewis acid catalyst.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a flame-retarding polymer composition free of evaporation loss of flame retardant during processing and excellent in light and heat resistance by mixing a polymer with a specified halogen compound. CONSTITUTION:A flame-retarding polymer composition is produced by mixing a polymer with a 4,4'-bis(phthalimido)diphenyl sulfone derivative of the formula (wherein X is Br or Cl; k, l, m and n are each 0-4, and k+l+m+n>1) [e.g., 4,4'-bis(dibromophthalimido)diphenyl sulfone] as a flame retardant. The above polymer composition is freed of evaporation loss of flame retardant during processing and excels in light and heat resistance and also in whiteness as compared with the conventional imide compound. The above flame retardant can be obtained by reacting a halogenated phthalic anhydride with a halogenated 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone.
