Abstract: A process for producing benzyl alcohol of high purity by hydrolysis of benzyl acetate in the presense of a solid acid catalyst, comprising steps of feeding benzyl acetate, water, and acetic acid to a hydrolysis reactor packed with a solid acid catalyst to cause reaction to obtain a liquid reaction mixture containing benzyl acetate, water, benzyl alcohol, and acetic acid; introducing the liquid reaction mixture to an acetic acid-water recovery column to separate the liquid reaction mixture by distillation into a column top distillate composed of acetic acid and water and a column bottom liquid composed mainly of benzyl alcohol and benzyl acetate; recycling the column top distillate of the acetic acid-water recovery column, after removing most of the acetic acid by an acetic acid-water separation column, to the hydrolysis reactor.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for the production of benzyl alcohol with excellent operation stability. SOLUTION: Benzyl acetate, methanol and a basic catalyst are supplied to a reaction distillation column A and benzyl alcohol is produced by the catalytic reaction of benzyl acetate with methanol in the presence of the basic catalyst. The molar ratio of the feeding rate of methanol to that of benzyl acetate is set to >=3, the feeding position (feeding stage) of methanol is set between the feeding position (feeding stage) of benzyl acetate and a position (stage) below the feeding position (stage) of benzyl acetate by three theoretical stages. The reflux of the column top mixture for the fractionation of methyl acetate and methanol is omitted in the present process.

SOLUTION: Benzyl acetate, methanol, water and a basic catalyst are supplied to a reaction distillation column A and benzyl alcohol is produced by the catalytic reaction of benzyl acetate with methanol in the presence of the basic catalyst. A fractionation part for methyl acetate and methanol is placed above the feeding position (feeding stage) of benzyl acetate and a part of column top mixture is refluxed. The refluxing ratio X and the molar ratio Y of the supplied methanol to the supplied benzyl acetate is maintained to satisfy the formula, Y>=1.507+0.662/(X+0.444) (wherein, X>0).

Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce the subject compounds in high selectivity and in good yields by treating an amine compound in the presence of a crystalline aluminosilicate catalyst carrying an inorganic salt. CONSTITUTION:An amine compound having a group of the formula (R -R are H, 1-3C alkyl) is treated at 250-450 deg.C in the presence of a crystalline aluminosilicate catalyst which carries an inorganic salt (e.g. sodium sulfate) and which has a silica/alumina molar ratio of >=12/1. preferably (40-5000)/1 to produce the objective compound. The carrying treatment of the inorganic salt on the crystalline aluminosilicate can be performed e.g. by a method comprising impregnating the powder or molded product of the aluminosilicate with the inorganic salt or mixing the powder of the aluminosilicate with the powder of the inorganic salt when molded, before or after the calcination of the catalyst.
