    Abstract: PURPOSE:To detect a defect even in a rotating member made of a conductive material even when a fine defect in the strength exists only on the surface of the member, by arranging a bar code at a portion of the rotating member higher in the load than other portions thereof. CONSTITUTION:A bar code film 3 having a bar code 2 printed is made to adhere to a portion 1c of a rotating member 1 higher in the load than other portions. A code 2b with the width (b) is arranged on the code 2 at a pitch P in a specified number or the like. A projector 4 and a light receiver 5 are set as opposed to the portion with the code 2. With such an arrangement, light is projected 4 to the member 1 rotating and the reflected light from the portion with the bar code is checked 5 to detect light of the reflected light through a processing circuit 8. When the code 2 retains an initial form, a waveform for the corresponding code portion is obtained as a signal of a certain output level. However, as the code 2 is deformed following a local deformation of the member 1, the output level lowers and this enables the detection of possible local physical change of the member 1 to find the generation of a defect in the strength.
