    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for reducing or excluding a gaseous impurity in e resin melt in which the gaseous impurity has an ultralow diffusion rate or from the resin melt. SOLUTION: This method for removing a volatile material from a thermoplastic polymer containing a gaseous impurity in an apparatus equipped with a melting part, a mixing part and a vacuum part and comprises the following: (a) a step for adding a granular foaming agent directly or in a masterbatch to a polymer before introducing the polymer into the melting part or adding a gaseous foaming agent to the mixing part, (b) a step for melting the polymer in the mixing part, (c) a step for mixing the molten polymer with the foaming agent in the mixing part under a pressure sufficient to maintain the foaming agent in the mixture, (d) a step for decomposing the granular foaming agent in the mixing part and/or the vacuum part at a temperature sufficient for decomposition and expansion or expanding the gaseous foaming agent in the vacuum part, (e) a step for reducing the pressure of the molten polymer at the surface by an amount sufficient to remove essentially all the gaseous impurity in the vacuum part, (f) a step for suitably repeating the steps (c), (d) and (e) at least once and (g) and a step for recovering the polymer in an essentially unexpanded state.

    Abstract: A process for the devolatilization of a thermoplastic polymer containing gaseous impurities in an apparatus having a melting zone, a mixing zone, and a reduced pressure zone, comprising: (a) (i) adding a granular blowing agent directly or via a masterbatch to the polymer prior to the introduction of the polymer into the melting zone, said blowing agent being added in an amount of about 1 to about 4 percent by weight based on the weight of the polymer or (ii) adding a gaseous blowing agent to the mixing zone; (b) melting the polymer in the melting zone; (c) mixing the molten polymer and blowing agent in the mixing zone under sufficient pressure to maintain the blowing agent in the mixture; (d) at a temperature sufficient for decomposition or expansion, (i) decomposing the granular blowing agent in the mixing zone and/or in the reduced pressure zone or (ii) expanding the gaseous blowing agent in the reduced pressure zone wherein the blowing agent in its decomposed or expanded state develops froth cells in the molten polymer; (e) in the reduced pressure zone, reducing the pressure at the surface of the molten polymer in a sufficient amount to remove essentially all of the gaseous impurities; (f) optionally, repeating steps (c), (d), and (e) at least once; and (g) recovering the polymer in an essentially unfoamed state. e

    Abstract: There is provided a method which reduces fines while maintaining the bulk handling advantages of granular or particulate elastomers such as those produced in gas phase processes and which affords continuous bulk handling of synthetic rubbers or elastomers such as those produced in solution and/or suspension processes. The method comprises (1) feeding an crumb form elastomer or a granular elastomer which contains fines along with optionally one or more filler materials to a mixer/extruder where it is masticated and melted into a compound; (2) pumping the compound through an orifice of the mixer/extruder, and (3) cutting and forming the compound into shaped pellets ranging in size from about 0.5 to 30 mm.
