Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high strength polyethylene film extruded from a blended material consisting of copolyethylenes. SOLUTION: This high strength polyethylene film consists of a blended material consisting of 2 kinds of ethylene/α-olefin copolymers having approximately 5-50 g/10 min range flow index, approximately 10-50 range melt flow rate, 0.900-0.940 g/cm density, approximately 98,000 190,000 range molecular weight and approximately 2-8 range Mw/Mn. The blended material is produced by mixing a first copolymer and a second copolymer both having almost similar molecular weights. Each copolymer is a copolymer of ethylene with a 3-8C α-olefin and the copolymers having the above characteristics in prescribed ranges are used.

The first copolymer has: (i) FI = 5 to about 75 g \ 10 minutes; (ii) MFR 10 to about 50; (iii) a density = 0.860 to 0.930 g cm-3;(iv) a weight average MW = 87,000 to about 190.000; and (v) an Mw/Mn ratio = 2 to about 4 and the second copolymer has (i) FI = 5 to about 75 g \ 10 minutes; (ii) MFR = 10 to about 50; (iii) a density = 0.935 to 0.970 g cm-3; (iv) MW = 87,000 to about 190,000; and (v) Mw/Mn ratio = 2 to about 4, the weight ratio of the first copolymer to the second copolymer = 70:30 to about 30:70. Also claimed is the preparation of the blend.

Abstract: A gas phase process for the production of a polyethylene blend comprising contacting ethylene and at least one alpha-olefin comonomer having 3 to 8 carbon atoms with a magnesium/titanium based catalyst system including an activator and a cocatalyst in each of two fluidized bed reactors connected in series, under polymerization conditions, with the provisos that: (a) the mixture of ethylene copolymer matrix and active catalyst formed in the first reactor in the series is transferred to the second reactor in the series; (b) other than the active catalyst referred to in proviso (a) and the cocatalyst referred to in proviso (e), no additional catalyst is introduced into the second reactor; (c) in the first reactor in which a low melt index copolymer is made: (1) the alpha-olefin is present in a ratio of about 0.01 to about 0.4 mole of alpha-olefin per mole of ethylene; (2) optionally, hydrogen is present in a ratio of about 0.001 to about 0.3 moles of hydrogen per mole of ethylene; and (3) the ethylene partial pressure is at least about 40 pounds per square inch; and (d) in the second reactor in which a high melt index copolymer is made: (1) the alpha-olefin is present in a ratio of about 0.01 to about 0.6 mole of alpha-olefin per mole of ethylene; (2) hydrogen is present in a ratio of about 1 to about 2.5 moles of hydrogen per mole of ethylene; and (3) diethyl zinc is added in an amount of about 2 to about 40 moles of diethyl zinc per mole of titanium; and (e) additional hydrocarbyl aluminum cocatalyst is introduced into the second reactor in an amount sufficient to restore the level of activity of the catalyst transferred from the first reactor to about the initial level of activity in the first reactor.

Abstract: Bimodal resin products are produced in a single reactor by using two bicomponent catalyst compositions, each having a high molecular weight and a low molecular weight component, in different ratios. The HMW/LMW split of the final resin product is controlled accurately by controlling the ratio of the feed of the two bicomponent catalyst compositions. Bimodal or polymodal effects are also achieved for properties or characteristics other than molecular weight. More complex results can be achieved with more than two components. The invention is applicable to a wide variety of polymer products, particularly polyolefins and polyethylene.
