Abstract: The invention deals with the preparation of nitrite esters in vapor phase from nitrogen oxide, alcohol and an inert diluent. The reaction, which occurs between 50 and 140 DEG C at or above atmospheric pressure, takes place into a first reaction zone optimizing the reaction N2O3 + ROH -> RONO + HONO and a second reaction zone optimizing the reaction ROH + HONO -> RONO + H2O. The formation of acid by-products is minimized as compared to a unitary reaction zone.
