Abstract: A coated nickel base superalloy single crystal turbine airfoil, blade (1), which is subject to gas turbine engine operation, can crack during refurbishment by a stress corrosion mechanism when exposed to certain corrosive media. The rapid thermal cycling that occurs during typical gas turbine engine operation results in high, non-uniform stresses across the airfoil, producing large localized residual strains in the article at ambient temperatures. Exposure to a corrosive environment, such as during coating removal or agressive cleaning, can produce chordwise cracks in a large number of the airfoils exposed. Such cracking is avoided by subjecting the articles to a preliminary stress relieving heat treatment which reduces the residual strains to a level below which cracking will not occur, prior to exposure to the corrosive media.

Abstract: A die casting machine (18) includes a melting unit (24), a horizontal shot sleeve (30) in fluid communication with die cavity (36) for receiving molten titanium from the melting unit (24), and a plunger (40) sealing and moveable engagement with the shot sleeve (30) for forcing molten material from the shot sleeve (30) into the die cavity (36). The melting unit (24), the shot sleeve (30) and the die cavity (36) are maintained in a non-reactive environment. The material is melted to a low superheat, e.g. less than about 200 DEG F/95 DEG C. Molten material is then transferred from the melting unit (24) to the shot sleeve (30) to fill not more than about one half of the shot sleeve volume. The molten material is injected from the sleeve (30) into the die cavity (36) using the plunger (40) for solidification in the die cavity (36). The resulting articles have a fine average grain microstructure and are characterized by an absence of flowlines.

Abstract: High modulus turbine shafts and high modulus cylindrical articles are described as are the process parameters for producing these shafts and cylindrical articles. The shafts/articles have a high Young's modulus as a result of having high modulus crystal texture along the longitudinal axis of the shaft/article. The shafts are produced from directionally solidified seeded single crystal cylinders that are axisymmetrically hot worked before a limited recrystallization process is carried out at a temperature below the recrystallization temperature of the alloy. The disclosed process produces an intense singular texture and results in shaft or cylindrical article with a Young's modulus that is at least 40% greater than that of conventional nickel or iron alloys or conventional steels.
