Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved quenching method and quenching apparatus. SOLUTION: The quenching apparatus 100 includes a first cooling section 101, a second cooling section 103 and a central cooling section 105. The first cooling section 101 and the second cooling section 103 include respectively supports 107 and 115, pipes 109 and 117, and spacers 111 and 119. The pipes 109, 117 each has an inlet attached to a fluid source. The above pipes 109 and 117 have openings for spraying a fluid, which are regularly arranged around the pipes to provide axisymmetric cooling to an annular forged object F. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO

The apparatus 100 increases a cooling rate of the first section relative to a cooling rate of a second section of the material, preferably minimizing a differential between the cooling rate of the first section and the cooling rate of the second section.

Abstract: A die cast article composed of titanium alloy is disclosed, and is preferably characterized by a transformed beta microstructure, a relatively fine average grain size and an absence of flow lines. Typical alloys include Ti 6Al-4V and Ti 6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo. Exemplary articles include gas turbine engine components. The articles may be used in place of corresponding forged articles, and have at least comparable mechanical properties.
