Abstract:
A fan case for a gas turbine engine includes a composite fan containment case having an outer surface, a front and a rear. An attachment flange and a mounting ring are respectively provided on the front and the rear. A bolt attachment is supported on the outer surface. The composite fan containment case has a containment area that is configured to be axially aligned with a fan blade. A ballistic liner is arranged in the containment area.
Abstract:
According to various embodiments, a carbon fiber structure is presented. The carbon fiber structure may address loads presented to an engine component in various directions. For instance, non-planar surfaces of a composite comprising a structure disclosed herein may achieve enhanced stiffness and/or strength. Thus, delamination of elements comprising a structure disclosed herein may be reduced. A three dimensional weave of carbon fiber elements through-thickness may provide enhanced strength to the composite material.
Abstract:
A blade containment system includes a plurality of circumferentially-arranged rotatable blades. Each blade has a blade compliance. An annular containment structure is arranged around the rotatable blades. The containment structure includes a liner that has a liner compliance. The blade compliance and the liner compliance are configured such that a strain induced on a respective one of the blades upon impact with the liner is less than a threshold critical strain beyond which the rotatable blades fracture.

Abstract:
A fan containment case for a gas turbine engine includes a first inner layer and a second layer outside the first inner layer, where the second layer is made of a first material having a first fabric architecture. The fan containment case also includes a third layer outside of the second layer, where the third layer is made of a second material having a second fabric architecture, and at least one of the first material and the first fabric architecture of the second layer is different from the second material and the second architecture, respectively, of the third layer. A fourth outer layer is located outside of the third layer.
Abstract:
An attachment structure for a case includes a V-groove defined by first and second arms extending circumferentially around the case and meeting at a lower portion. At least a portion of the attachment structure is a three-dimensionally woven composite.
