Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air seal for a gas turbine engine having performance excellent more than a conventional air seal. SOLUTION: This air seal for the gas turbine engine includes a seal base material 30 and an abradable seal layer 38 arranged on this base material 30. This abradable seal layer 38 includes at least a bulk material of a thermosetting polymer such as phenol powder and a thermoplastic binder material such as PEEK. This abradable layer 38 can include a filler so as to have desired characteristics such as porosity becoming easily abrasive and dry lubricity.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air seal for a gas turbine engine having performance excellent more than a conventional air seal by using a conventional device. SOLUTION: This method of forming the air seal for the gas turbine engine includes the performance of plasma spraying of an abradable seal layer 38 on a base material 30 by preparing the seal base material 30, and this plasma spraying includes the performance of spraying of a bulk material of a thermosetting polymer and a thermoplastic binder material. The method of forming the air seal in another form includes adhering of this molded seal material to the seal base material 30 by removing the molded seal material by molding the abradable layer 38 including the thermosetting polymer and the thermoplastic material by preparing the seal base material 30.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a polished coating layer excellent in durability on the surface of a super alloy substrate or the like by applying plasma spraying of a material composed of the grains of an abrasive material to the surface of the substrate. SOLUTION: A plasma spraying machine is fed with, 50 to 60% ceramic matrix powder with 3 to 150 micron particle size composed of oxide such as Al2 O3 and 40 to 50% abrasive particles with 3 to 150 micron particle size composed of carbide or nitride such as TiC, BN or the like in which shearing force is higher than that of the matrix particles also having an angular shape to form a composite coating member 26 excellent in durability with the Al2 O3 ceramics as a matrix 34 and the carbide or nitride such as TiC, BN or the like as abrasive particles 36 on the surface of a rotor substrate 14 of the turbine part in an axial flow turbine.

Abstract: A composite ceramic coating 26 having abrasive properties for application to a metallic substrate such as an airfoil tip is provided which includes a ceramic matrix 34 and a plurality of ceramic abrasive particles 36 disposed within said ceramic matrix 34. The abrasive particles 36 have a shear strength substantially greater than that of the ceramic matrix 34 and possess an angular geometry. The coating is preferably plasma sprayed onto the substrate.
