    Abstract: The invention describes a method for extracting DNA from a sample. It involves contacting a sample with a separation reagent which permits differentiated solvation of DNA and protein. By adding a gel polymer, such as a silica gel polymer to the mixture of sample and separating reagent followed by agitation via, e.g., centrifugation, the DNA and protein are separated, with the gel acting as a block to prevent contamination of the DNA phase by the protein. Higher yields of DNA are obtained as compared to methodologies where the gel is not used. Additionally, the problems associated with the physical contact of the solvents, which are frequently carcinogens, are avoided. Also taught are kits which can be used in connection with the inventive method.

    Abstract: A system (10) analyzes signals representative of a subject's brain activity in a signal processor (12) for information indicating the subject's current activity state and for predicting a change in the activity state. One preferred embodiment uses a combination of nonlinear filtering methods to perform real-time analysis of the electro-encephalogram (EEG) or electro-corticogram (ECoG) signals from a subject patient for information indicative of or predictive of a seizure, and to complete the needed analysis at least before clinical seizure onset. The preferred system then performs an output task for prevention or abatement of the seizure, or for recording pertinent data.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for inducing bone formation via administration of an extract of devitalized, freeze dried Saos-2 cells. The extract is prepared by contacting the freeze dried Saos-2 cells, which are devitalized in the act of freeze drying, with a weak denaturing agent of the type used to separate proteins from cells. It is not clear that the active ingredient in the extract is a protein; however, the extract does have properties superior to comparable treatment using whole Saos-2 cells. Also, described are the extracts themselves and various compositions containing it.
